Connectivity and the app
First, the obvious: This speaker doesn’t seem to have grasped the mobility concept. It’s like a dog without a leash that still won’t run away because it doesn’t have a battery. So nothing works without cables here – there was really potential left on the energy highway. But we know that enough from real life on the long haul. At least there is still a physical power button on the back – good! Next to it we find the 3.5 mm jack and a USB port for the external player. The two bass reflex ports are flanking low construction in nostril optics.
But wow! When connected wirelessly, the QD35 covers a distance of a bit more than 12 meters, as if it were permanently on the run from the vacuum cleaner robot. Thanks to Bluetooth 5.3, you can almost visit the neighbor to borrow a potato and without losing the beat. So the “How do I operate this thing?” conundrum is easily solved – either directly on the speaker or with the accompanying app. And this app not only offers the latest hits, but also the top 10 relaxation sounds. Fancy being serenaded by singing crickets?
On the speaker itself, the controls feel like an exciting arcade game. Power button and knobs let you juggle between audio sources, reach the volume of a rock concert, and even control the color show of the RGB lighting.
The GaN charging function
Let me put it this way, the QD35 has the secret talent of simultaneously blasting music to a wild party and not just rescuing a single phone when its battery level screams “Help!”. And that’s thanks to the built-in superhero: the GaN charger! Well, marketing has to be, of course, and now we also know where the magic 35 on the case comes from, which made it to the outer packaging as a product image! On the left side of the Edifier QD35 – where all the exciting things happen – there are USB-A and USB-C ports.
When plugged in, you almost expect the speaker to say, “Go ahead, plug something in, I’m ready!” Via USB-A, it breaks a sweat like this and still manages 18 watts. However, it goes to the gym with USB-C and easily manages the full 35 watts. Perfect to get your smartphone or tablet up and running again while dancing. A larger notebook would also like to have some, but the power of the Edifier is not enough. You can’t have everything! But my ultra-light LG Gram is frugal, so it fits quite well.
However, I have to be honest about one thing: While the charging ports do the job flawlessly (you could almost sing a little praise for them), this feature is more of an icing on the cake than the main attraction. A nice marketing extra, sure, but when you buy the Edifier QD35, you should be thinking more about the cool music and less about the charging. It’s a bit like buying a sports car because the cup holder is so great. But hey, who ever argued against a little extra cream? Only killjoys and professional hunger pains.
