Sound Check
Now we come to the most important part of the review: the sound quality. Let’s take a look at the price first. This speaker system is available for less than 100 euros and let’s face it, at this price you can really do little wrong and almost only win. Because for this price, the D12 delivers an impressive performance. As shipped, it has a rather flat, neutral sound, which doesn’t bother me, for example. For the bathtub fraction, however, there is nevertheless good news. Conveniently for lovers of the thick low end and top end is that you can adjust the bass and treble individually via the adjustable controls on the top of the speaker.
When you turn up the bass, the speaker comes to life quite quickly. The 10 cm drivers then really get going. The powerful bass response is very loud, which is actually surprising considering the size, and the sound quality is largely maintained when you increase the volume. I just wrote something about the amplifier. At very high volumes, however, there is slight distortion, which is to be expected from a speaker in this price and performance class. You can’t outsmart physics after all. In my opinion, the upper bass is a bit too full, which extends into the lower mids and can sound a bit “pappy” when the control is turned up fully (+ 6 dB). This also applies to the somewhat too peaked trebles, if you boost them by up to 6 dB.
The tweeters, by the way, are in a different league and I was reasonably flashed. The combination of mids and highs is perfectly done and you don’t even notice the active crossover. The album Till Tomorrow (Yello) sounds absolutely transparent and high-resolution. Only the lack of low bass or too thick upper bass let you know that you are not one or two price classes higher. That was the moment when I wired up the subwoofer and lowered the bass a bit. The overall picture was then really excellent and almost unbelievable considering the price. But that’s cheating at the highest level, of course.
The fact is that the reproduction from around 54 Hz (i.e. just below the big bass drum) is crisp and without ugly resonances. There is also nothing drones and rumbles and the D12 sounds by far better than my two Docking D-Fine (1st and 2nd Generation). Apart from the fact that completely different volume levels can be achieved here without distortion. If you have a rainproof corner, the D12 would also cut a fine figure on the balcony and probably drive the dear neighbors crazy.
You can live with the connectivity and you could even connect a record player to the device in a really oldschool way. Analog in and analog out. However, there is not much more for the 100 Euros except for Bluetooth. And Bluetooth is limited to the version 5.0; you will not be able to use aptX or AAC.
Summary and conclusion
The D12 is a world of its own for 100 Euros. Yes, it’s a bit niche, but that doesn’t bother if you’re looking for a space-saving speaker that can do well and loudly. If an active stereo system is ruled out simply because of the cabling, the D12 is the ideal stopgap. For rooms up to 20 m², the D12 is even reasonably suitable for parties and even outdoors, the 70 watts RMS are still reason enough to get a nice display. The look and feel are right, and you can choose from three planking colors.
I’ll even take the liberty of giving it a recommendation to buy, if only because of my neighbors. After all, they should get something out of it when the evenings get warmer again. After all, the D12 fits perfectly on the window sill. And I also gave my parents one of these. It’s in the kitchen now, hanging from the Amazon Dot. Then there’s Alexa and the music in Schön, even if it’s only the local radio station in the stream. But even that still sounds acceptable and better than on the Amazon puck.
