Edifier is also known for various, somewhat niche products besides normal active speakers. The Edifier D12 is such a piece, as it ends up being a kind of sound furniture that comes across as massive yet compact. As a Bluetooth speaker, the D12 actually contradicts all common clichés and anyone who has little space but a little less than 100 euros to spare will quickly find what they are looking for here. So today I’m not testing an audiophile beacon project of the acoustic high cuisine, but real, down-to-earth sound food with a somewhat woody character. Why not?
The Edifier D12 is therefore a bit different from the other speakers I have tested. It is a kind of hybrid between a bookshelf speaker, a portable speaker and a speaker you can use at social gatherings. The D12 speaker arrived well packaged and showed no shipping damage. Since the outer packaging is extremely sturdy, I would imagine that the speaker will remain intact inside even if it gets tossed around in the shipping warehouse. This also gives the term “roaring cube” a new meaning. Dice of throwing and roaring when the massive piece fell on someone’s foot during delivery.
Scope of delivery and accessories
The technology industry should really start taking at least small steps to combat the world’s plastic problem. Disposable plastic is a criterion that I will continue to consider in my reviews. After opening the product packaging, the D12 was wrapped in a plastic foil as dust protection, which is actually quite unnecessary. As an alternative, paper or wax paper could be used.
The instruction book, AUX cable and remote control were each packed in their own plastic bags. It would be really easy to switch to paper alternatives and possibly even save money in the process. The styrofoam holder that holds the device in place could also be replaced with a cardboard tray. Despite all that, though, this speaker isn’t one of the worst disposable plastic users I’ve covered in my reviews. I disposed of everything accordingly in the yellow garbage can, but it could have been solved better. What I then had left, you can see in the picture above: speakers, manual, two cables (RCA and RCA jack) and the remote control. And if you prefer a more technical look: The front cover can be removed by the way.
Optics and haptics
I love a sleek, minimalist design, and the D12’s faux wood cabinet fits the bill perfectly. Its attractive looks and “almost portable” technical design make this speaker a definite shortlist candidate if you’re looking for a new speaker system for your home (or backyard). The wood planking of the MDF body is not the only color option, as the D12 is also available in innocent white and exciting black. With its massive case and the imitation leather look of the top cover, the D12 definitely meets aesthetic demands as well.
And when you think of a Bluetooth speaker, you might imagine a small, rectangular speaker or a large, cylindrical speaker. If that’s the case now, you’re completely wrong, because the Edifier D12 doesn’t fit any of those stereotypes. Well, it is rectangular – but it is also large and weighs a whopping 4.6 kilograms. With dimensions of about 36 cm wide, 15 cm high and 20 cm deep, this makes it best suited for placement on a desk, shelf or sideboard. So it is not mobile, there is also the power cord in the way. So there is no battery.
Operating concept and remote control
The Edifier D12 comes with an easy-to-use remote control. This allows you to quickly change the volume or switch to the desired input source. There are buttons for switching input sources, music playback, a mute button, and buttons for movie and music modes. As usual with cheaper Edifier speakers, the remote control is rather weak and of inferior quality. Care should be taken not to sit on it. It is quite sensitive and also scratches easily.
There’s also a handy indicator light so you can see at a glance what the D12 is up to. This ranges from the selected input choice to the BT search mode. But this LED is quite weak, so you can almost not see anything of it in bright environments as long as the fabric cover of the speakers is plugged in. It’s a bit like flying blind, but you always get it right somehow.
This is actually, together with the very weak labeling of the knobs on the top, my only criticism. With a little thought, however, you could have figured it out yourself, especially with the almost illegible labeling. Or you’re a caveman, in which case it doesn’t matter anyway. The rest of the operation is then self-explanatory.
