Measurements
Since the drivers and the construction do not differ from those of the HS65 Surround, I would like to refer to the measurements of the wired version once again at this point. Since I can’t detect any sonic difference between the two versions, I assume that the measurements are the same.
Field test
Since “sound” is always very subjective and Igor has explained the result of the measurement linked above quite well, I will not go into further detail. Personally, the sound is too muffled in the basic setting, the speech frequencies are emphasized too much and the low bass range is a bit boomy. You can adjust the sound to your preferences with the help of the equalizer or the comfortable SoundID functions of the iCUE software (see next page), but you simply cannot expect a real “HiFi” pleasure from a gaming headset. Overall, the (adjusted) sound of the HS65 Wireless is definitely okay.
The strengths are definitely where Corsair has put the focus: gaming. In shooters like Counter-Strike and PUBG, the tuning resulted in a very good location of the opponents, which was also already evident in the wired brother.
The headset is quite convincing in terms of wearing comfort, haptics and wireless properties. Even after several hours of home office wear, there was no pinching, hot ears, or other unpleasantness. I used the device for 2 full workdays (=16 hours) + one gaming session, where the content was quiet music listening, conference calls and some gaming including Discord. After a total of about 19 hours, the battery was finally empty and the device was off. Since I listened to music very loudly for quite a long time in the beginning and the smartphone was always connected in parallel, the battery life stated by the manufacturer should definitely be achievable.
Microphone check
At this point, the review of the Corsair HS80 RGB Wireless popped into my head, which revealed a similar problem. First of all, two voice recordings before I go into the result.
Voice recording without Mic Boost
Voice recording with Mic Boost
I actually tried different USB ports to rule out a hardware failure because of the disappointing result. Unfortunately, the recording quality was consistently as heard in the unedited sound files – dull, quiet, and somehow intermittently fluctuating in volume.
Why I was reminded of the HS80 RGB? Because I had also tested several connections on the device at the time because of the low volume of the microphone. Overall, however, the HS80 had the better voice quality and BOTH were significantly worse than the wired HS65 Surround. It’s a shame that it’s the rule rather than the exception that the microphones in wireless headsets almost always drop significantly compared to their wired siblings. This is fine for a casual session in Discord, but I would not recommend the HS65 Wireless for a clear communication in the pro-gaming sector.
