When I tested the CORSAIR HS65 Surround last year, I was torn. On the one hand, it really didn’t do anything wrong in terms of workmanship, but on the other hand, I found the sound and features a bit sobering for the called price. You can read why I came to a similar conclusion about the wireless version of the HS65 in the review.
With the HS65 Wireless, CORSAIR now offers a wireless version of the HS65 Surround that was released last year. Because the headset is very similar to its wired brother in terms of construction, I’ll take the liberty of recycling some passages from the old article. A new feature of the HS65 Wireless is the possibility to simultaneously connect to a smartphone and make phone calls while connected to the PC via the dongle. Otherwise, both devices offer an almost identical build and practically the same key data. Simulated 7.1 surround sound and SoundID for personalizing the sound experience are just as much a part of the overall package as very good workmanship and great wearing comfort. First things first: Unpack first!
Unboxing
Like all current Corsair devices, the HS65 Wireless comes in a striking yellow box.
Also identical to the HS65 Surround, the HS65 Wireless is held by a cardboard carrier and is protected from dust with an eco-friendly plastic bag. I’m not a total eco, but can only welcome this trend towards more eco-friendly packaging from Corsair and Elgato.
In addition to the device, two paper guides, a USB A to USB C charging cable and of course a dongle for connecting are included.
There is little to complain about in terms of workmanship. Nothing squeaks or creaks, everything feels valuable and robust. But you can expect that at this price, I think.
The adjustable bracket has a basic metal construction and is well grated.
The replaceable ear pads are covered with soft faux leather, while the contact surface on the ear is made of a pleasant textile fabric that is supposed to prevent the ears from heating up.
The cutout is quite generous with approx. 65x45mm and thus also has the same dimensions as the HS65 Surround.
The driver is also identical.
In a direct comparison, the two brothers are like two peas in a pod.
The wireless version only replaces the cable with a USB-C port and adds three buttons: power on/off, Bluetooth pairing and muting the microphone if you do not want to use the flip-up function. As with the wired model, the volume control functions to switch through the various equalizer presets.
On the whole, the HS 65 Wireless makes a good haptic impression. It feels valuable and sturdy, the controls are coherently arranged and the ear pads sit very comfortably on the head. In this respect, everything has been done right, and RGB overkill is not everyone’s cup of tea anyway.
