With the Dark Base Pro 901, BeQuiet! replaces the previous flagship Dark Base Pro 900. In order to not completely change the successful and very flexible DNA of the Dark Base series, mainly changes in detail were made besides the more modern look. Read our review to find out whether the noble case is convincing.
Clever detail solutions have always been the great strength of the Dark Base case series and since “German Engineering” enjoys a positive reputation not only at home, BeQuiet! cases could make a name for themselves around the globe. With the primary goal of trimming the case for the quietest possible operation, the Dark Base (Pro) series had previously been equipped with a completely insulated lid and closed bottom, which for years was met with criticism from many testers. Although the corresponding areas were perforated at the edge, this was still not optimal for the airflow.
With the 901, the German manufacturer is now responding to customer wishes and is giving the buyer the freedom to choose whether he wants his lid insulated or open – by simply removing the pre-mounted insulation panels. If you want to know exactly which innumerable improvements have been made in detail, you can find them on the manufacturer’s website, where you can make a direct comparison of the two cases in terms of equipment. However, I can preface the review by saying that there was a change of plans after the unboxing and I transplanted my private system into the Dark Base Pro 901 instead of the usual test hardware. But before we get into whether or not I regretted this decision, let’s unbox the impressive case first.
Scope of delivery
At the size of the box, my wife first thought that I was testing another gaming chair, but the box wasn’t quite that huge after all. The trend is moving away from completely printed cardboard and even in the premium sector you can only find simple imprints.
Let’s dare to take a look inside. Instead of a guaranteed statically charged plastic foil, the BeQuiet! case is wrapped in a kind of cloth bag. We also unpack the box inside the carton.
I like that. No electric shock due to the charged foil and it also makes a very different impression visually, almost like a presentation.
Small comparison: A big tower case and a box full of accessories. I’ve never seen anything like it!
And as if the moving box full of parts wasn’t enough, there’s another huge box full of parts waiting right inside. Good grief!
Before we move on to the technical specifications, we quickly unpack the abundant accessories. Two boxes that could hold a mini-ITX PC and an Ikea desk in terms of size!
Overview:
Mounting hardware, rubber bumpers, Velcro cable ties, and a handy storage box for the small parts.
The magnetic GPU support with integrated cable management.
The 5.25″ bay for mounting an optical drive.
On the left: A bracket for mounting fans instead of hard drives in the case’s side panel.
Right: A large panel for hiding cables (will be used later).
Top: The mesh front for maximum airflow.
Bottom: The cover for the bottom with air redirection to the graphics card.
Top: Additional cable channel for inverted installation.
Bottom: GPU support for inverted installation.
