Bass reproduction in the sound check
The nuSub XW-800 Slim makes a good effort, because the specified frequency lower limit of 36 Hz is not an iron curtain, where then below nothing is possible. Especially lying down and positioned correctly, it still goes below 30 Hz, even if below about 25 Hz it really stops and the Tchaikovsky was completely sunk like a ship. However, you have to listen more closely, because most sources do not offer such deep signals. After all, the contraoctave is there completely and ambitiously from the beginning. Sonically, it’s all pleasantly deep and, with plugs, even commendably raven black. The bass reproduction is then very crisp and dry as dust.
Nothing hums and scrapes, not even in the approach, but it also remains free of ugly resonances, once you have properly calibrated the nuSub XW-800 Slim. The bass is just there, which is exactly as intended and desired, although rather not quite as dominant as in the large subwoofers of the XW series. Moreover, you don’t have to do without anything for the party sound system. The soft clipping comes into play rather abruptly and the onset of pumping and overdriving then sounds not so good including the distortions. But it has to get that far first. Because the neighbors will probably come first if you don’t have your own house and the windows are closed.
This area would be covered by the nuSub XW-800 Slim after all almost completely, but I would only recommend that if the other boxes are really only smaller roar cubes. Even with the A-125s, I would prefer to go to 80 or 100 Hz maximum, because male voices are already very susceptible in the upper bass. Yes, you can certainly do that with the keynote of the male vocals, but you quickly create way too much fullness for nothing, at least in music playback. For movies where most of the vocals tend to be in the center, you can go a little higher, but it doesn’t have to be.
In general, however, one can say: The playback never really suffers from the complexity of the sources. Thus, short impulses (e.g. from the bass drum) can still be beautifully differentiated from long-drawn bass guitar riffs, and the background is never completely pumped away, only to snap-breathe in again a bit later. Together instead of against each other, you can leave it like that. Here you also notice the difference to the 200 euro subwoofer from the discounter.
Summary and conclusion
The nuSub XW-800 Slim serves a distinct niche and does it really well. Nubert has already gold-plated this with the 585 euros in the Nubert store (direct sales), but there are actually no competitors to be taken first in this format. The supplier’s creativity can be a bit expensive if you don’t have room for the classic subwoofer, but still don’t want to do without this sonic end piece. After all, if you have enough space, you don’t even have to ask yourself this question.
Or you’re one of those clear-room fanatics who finds rooms that are as empty as possible with only a few bold accents really beautiful. He simply puts this subwoofer under the designer couch, sits on top of the seating and lounging furniture with his mate tea in hand, and then lets his back be scratched with a pleasant 36 Hz. Or you mount the subwoofer on the wall like an acoustic radiator (two of them if you like) and the guests are amazed. The gamer of the world with a foot pedal gallery under the desk places the subwoofer as far away from the foot operation as possible on the side of the desk or puts it in the supine position on some cabinet. The beloved rubber hedgehog as THE panacea please never forget!
If I had not already privately bought so many Nubis along with the associated sound furniture (unfortunately, the cute figures are now EOL), then the nuSub XW-800 Slim would certainly be worth considering. These are very durable consumer goods, where the somewhat higher purchase price is well put into perspective over time. So you can do, especially if space is rather tight.
