Summary and conclusion
So rather Intel or AMD? It is difficult to answer this question definitively and unambiguously. If we rely on our measurements, we find that an AMD platform is generally faster than an Intel platform in the same case at the same price, as long as it stays within the scope of the intended target group. Apart from some exceptions like 3D graphics in games. In 3DMark, for example, the Intel platform with its iGP Iris Xe is ahead. And clearly ahead of the Ryzen 5 5500U’s Radeon Graphics.
However, in practice, when you are content with typical office tasks (simulated by the PCMark 10 benchmark), the performance differences between the AMD and Intel platforms are practically non-existent. The differences only become apparent in professional applications (CAD, development, 3D modeling, etc.), where the Ryzen 5 5500U then gains the upper hand. But what does the buyer of such a 900 euro notebook actually want? Playing certainly not.
Sure, the 12. The 3rd generation could mix things up well here, but AMD also has new products in the pipeline. So today’s test is primarily an as-is analysis of the current, real-life window displays, which we have to make do with for lack of a Pampers program. But in the end, you’re also closer to the customer. Why Acer slightly (let’s call it cautiously) “disadvantages” the Ryzen in some points (keyword clock performance and fan curve) is of course very difficult to judge from the outside, because the (measurable by us) framework conditions would not have required that. Nevertheless, one should refrain from certain conspiracy theories, because a well-known Asian nonchalance and the gladly accepted walking on well-trodden paths might be much more likely.
If such a similar constellation of two very similar products with the new CPUs comes up again in the foreseeable future, we will of course strike again and follow up with a follow-up. Something like that is always interesting apart from the big gaming laptops. There are supposed to be people who are not (only) interested in the colorful entertainment, but who have to earn their living with such parts. The good old target group, you know…. 🙂
