The Radeon RX 7900XTX and the Radeon RX 7900XT are supposed to fix it for AMD in December and leave the good “old” Ada standing in the corner in shame. At least one hopes so. If, how and why, you will of course find out soon and in due time, because today is first of all the big weighing of the fighters and the obligatory meat inspection in full battle gear announced. And even if I actually do not like such an unboxing stuff: What must, that must. So let’s just do it and you may already watch curiously.
In front of us (and on top of each other) lie here now in the picture the two rather dissimilar sisters. For whom the one or the other looks more desirable in the end, that everyone must then also make out with himself and his financial-technical-valued purse.
After all, the gas, electricity and grocery bills at the end of the year are still a certain monetary low blow in the pit of the stomach. But when it comes to your favorite hobby, you sometimes use electric heating. Advantage graphics card over an oil radiator: several smartly controlled, permanently installed circulating air fans and a free image output to boot.
With the new RDNA3 graphics cards, AMD also relies on chiplets in desktop graphics cards for the first time. The Navi31 chips used have 58 billion transistors and are manufactured at TSMC in a 5nm process, while the six memory and cache dies (MCD) are manufactured in a slightly different 6nm process. These chiplets are then arranged around the GPU on a common BGA board. Besides the controller and the interface for the memory, these MCDs also offer 96 MB of Infinity cache.
With the help of the new chiplet design, AMD was able to increase the transistor density by 165 percent. As a result, there are now three options: Either a higher clock rate with the same power consumption, a lower power consumption with the same clock rate or a well-balanced compromise of both. However, AMD’s decision is under NDA, so let’s wait for the release.
The two new cards are quite different, and not only on the outside, but just as well. Exactly there I may betray today also already a few things. Of course, you will find out the more interesting rest when the time comes. The usual suspense and you think: What NVIDIA can do, we have been able to do for a long time. I have briefly summarized the technical data that is already known in a table:
RX 7900 XTX | RX 7900 XT | |
Compute units | 96 | 84 |
AI accelerators | 192 | 168 |
Ray tracing accelerators | 96 | 84 |
Memory | 24 GB GDDR6 | 20 GB GDDR6 |
Memory speed | 20 Gbps | 20 Gbps |
Memory bus size | 384-bit | 320-bit |
Game clock speed | 2.3 GHz | 2 GHz |
Output | DisplayPort 2.1 | DisplayPort 2.1 |
TBP | 355 W | 315 W |
MSRP | 1000 USD | 900 USD |
So what was that about Mug Shots, body measurements and weight? That’s exactly what’s coming in the next two pages in full, so please turn the page quickly!
