Summary
Now, of course, everyone will ask why AMD hasn’t brought the Radeon RX 7800XT yet. According to my projections, it would pretty much fit between a GeForce RTX 4070 and the RTX 4070 Ti – without any real competition from NVIDIA. Actually, something like that is an ideal case, if two things wouldn’t speak against it. AMD’s biggest problem is the overstock of the Radeon RX 6800(XT) and RX 6900XT. The Radeon Pro W7800 tested today is a card trimmed for efficiency, which sorts itself exactly between these two cards.
AMD could therefore bring a very efficient card on the performance level of an RX 6800XT or even leave the RX 6900XT behind with a small energetic crowbar. Only, one would harm oneself with this kind of cannibalization. The prices anyway. After all, who would buy a more expensive RX 7800XT when the older cards are available at a low price right now? Today’s projection clearly shows where the possible performance window is. In principle, the Radeon RX 7800XT would be the ideal filler for the huge gap between the two NVIDIA cards. Only, unfortunately, one stands in one’s own way here.
Another reason could be the quite high yield in RDNA3. Why should a working chip be artificially trimmed to 70 compute units (CU) when it could also be sold with considerably more as a higher-quality card? Either they are still accumulating salvage, or it is simply not yet time for the RX 7800XT (RDNA2 sell-off, RDNA3 yield). Only AMD knows that for sure. The Radeon Pro W7800 shows very clearly that the card does exist and the layout also works.
Conclusion
The Radeon RX 7800XT with a power limit of around 270 to 275 watts and a higher clock could well become a real blockbuster for AMD, if the price is right. This is because it fills a gap that NVIDIA has criminally left open and that definitely cannot be filled with the current generation. The Radeon RX 7800XT not only has more memory than the two NVIDIA cards, but it also places itself in the field of the more powerful WQHD cards for higher FPS rates without a direct opponent. NVIDIA would have to boost the GeForce RTX 4070 quite a bit as super version, which is not really realistic.
It would be a nice card if AMD would finally release it. But then the problem with the old stocks would have to be addressed proactively. Here, the possible and desirable gain in market share collides with naked economic considerations. Actually, it’s a real pity.
The graphics card was provided by AMD for workstation tests. The only condition was the compliance with lock periods, no influence or compensation took place.
