Current consumption
Since the current consumption was always of great interest for some of our readers, I bought a small USB multimeter for the corresponding measurements. Feedback from the community helps us to continuously improve the tests – so let us know if you have any suggestions or requests in this regard.
From previous measurements, it had been found that changing the lighting (brightness/effects) had a large impact on the actual power consumption. To present a meaningful and, most importantly, consistent result, I set a fixed lighting color. All effects cause a fluctuating power consumption at this point. Static white lighting draws the most power from the USB port and was therefore the color of choice.
Overall, the USB 3.0 port should actually only deliver 0.9A according to the specification. However, since the accuracy of the inexpensive meter is unknown, I would not consider the slight overshoot to be critical. Especially since the keyboard is also specified with 5V ⎓ 1.5A.
Processor load
Corsair points out in both the manual and the iCUE software that processing the high polling rates of the new AXON technology creates a bit more load on the CPU. Of course, measuring this is no easy feat with all the background services and CPU threads available today. Nevertheless, I wanted to check whether the extremely high sampling rates produce a measurably higher CPU load and for this I tested all gradations and noted the CPU load:
In fact, there is no measurable difference in terms of CPU utilization or power consumption. However, because the lighting and especially the lighting effects did have an influence on the current measurements, this measurement was performed without lighting.
Difference from the old K70 Rapidfire MK1
While the new K70 makes a completely different impression due to its different font, the new “logo” and the different special keys, it is actually only nuances where the original version and the latest bolide differ. In the profile, you can see that the new version is a bit more “defined” and not quite as angular. Overall, the new K70 looks much more elegant and calm.
