Sensor
The “normal” Prime mouse uses the TrueMove Pro sensor. Like previous models, this one was developed together with PixArt or by PixArt. Here are the technical details at a glance:
Presumably it is again a modified PMW3360DM-T2QU or PMW3389DM-T3QU. A confirmation on the part of Steelseries was not yet available despite inquiries.
There is also a short article from the manufacturer about the sensor.
Tracking was reliable and accurate at all times with no issues. Even with fast flicks and arcing movements, there were no spin-outs or mistakes. The base model of the Prime Mouse does not have a separate lift-off sensor, and there is also no calibration in the software. Accordingly, the mouse pointer trembles repeatedly when the mouse is raised and lowered, usually with a tendency to the upper left.
10x Lift-Off / 1500 CPI
I never really noticed it negatively during normal use, but still, at least a software calibration would have been appropriate here. This leaves only the option of the more expensive Prime+ with dedicated lift-off sensor
Software
The mouse can be customized with Steelseries GG, I used version 3.1.0. GG combines the previous software called Steelseries Engine with several other features. With about 350 Mbytes on the hard disk and a moderate working memory load, it’s not at the top in resource-saving programs for peripherals, but doesn’t stand out particularly negatively either.
What bothered me, though, is the lack of an option to set the installation path. Installed is namely unasked on the C: partition, here one could still improve. When starting the program for the first time, it is also very prominently placed that one should please create an account to use the advanced features like Cloudsave. If you refuse this, you can continue in guest mode without any problems, and you will only be asked again if you activate a corresponding feature.
Here is the overview of the device-specific functions in the integrated engine:
The settings defined here are saved on the mouse, only the illumination jumps back to a rainbow mode when the software is closed.
But beyond that, there’s a lot more you can do in GG, it acts more as a hub for built-in functions like recording clips and news from the manufacturer:
Now you can take that any way you want. The range of functions is very broad, but for my taste one could have asked during the installation what is really needed. Absolutely annoying to me that recording “Moments” and data collection is enabled by default. Both can be turned off in the options, but you don’t have to force yourself on the user like that either.
