Attention – listen carefully!
Besides the normal exchange of the card on the way of a classic RMA, PowerColor namely also offers the possibility to send paste, so that the users – based on our bilingual article (and the video) – do the rebuild themselves, which as we know saves a lot of time. Logistics aside, it can take weeks. Those who accept the paste and own exchange can de facto start right away themselves, because the conversion is thus covered by the warranty and you don’t have to wait forever. And – seriously – if you don’t really have two left hands, you can do the whole thing in no time at all…
And there used to be something with the thermal pads. Now PowerColor doesn’t use continuous pads anymore, but individual pads for each memory module. This costs more time, but brings better results. Only the voltage converters are still connected via long strips, logically.
Which brings us to functional control. Things like Unigine Heaven never generate enough GPU load on normal or older systems, especially since the usually weak CPUs also limit things here. To measure a delta to the hotspot is almost illusory. Therefore, the 100% load is now simulated with Furmark (BurnIn-Mode, Postprocessing On) and it also achieves significantly higher temperatures. What PowerColor unfortunately still completely ignored is my demand for a hot-box (closed construction) and the installation in horizontal AND vertical mounting direction. Yes, there are now also individual workstations in the test center, but unfortunately this has not yet arrived in production. But as we all know, hope dies last.
Summary and conclusion
That’s about it, especially since the whole visit hardly lasted any longer than writing it all down or commenting on it here. The sample production is highly interesting, especially since only the finest of the finest was used in the processes. Of course, this has nothing to do with real mass production (yet), but more production lines (and employees) are to be added. Then the announced numbers of units would certainly no longer be an issue.
Large mass producers create around 200k graphics cards per week, just to get a relation to the visited production. There is really still a lot of productive air open to the top. But you also have to admit that to PowerColor: For an experimental line, where you can approach the optimum quite safely, the visited factory is really optimally equipped. However, it has almost nothing to do with the hard everyday life in a real factory. That’s why I shrink at the beginning, because I’m not really one for industrial show interludes. And that’s exactly what the visit was, even if you can take away a lot of positive things. See you!
