Connectivity
Since the Turtle Beach Stealth 700 Gen 2 is a headset for the Xbox and the feature set is designed accordingly, the Xbox Wireless Adapter is mandatory for use on the PC. When connecting directly via Bluetooth, the headset is only recognized as a “speaker” by the PC, the microphone is then not usable and the sound is also not very good. Connected via Microsoft dongle, the headset is displayed in the device manager as headphones/headphone microphone(Xbox controller).
The smartphone, on the other hand, can be connected via Bluetooth and configured with Turtle Beach’s Audio Hub software, which will be introduced on page five.
Construction
At this point, I would like to go into more detail about the construction of the device, because that always stretches the frame of the unboxing part unnecessarily, I had already outsourced that in the last review and found it to be good.
The earphones are equipped with a hinge/joint, making them ideal for adjusting to the head size of the listener.
In addition, both ends of the headband have another joint that allows an ideal fit to the shape of the head.
The metal reinforced headband is of course adjustable. Even though the various steps are well detented, there is unfortunately no indicator of which step you are on.
Teardown
The well-designed and extremely shielding ear pads can be removed quite easily.
They are only clicked in and can be purchased separately. Unfortunately, this is apparently only possible via Turtle Beach’s US store, where the replacement parts cost $9.95 per side. However, you can also get the ear pads from the bay for about 15€/pair.
The 50mm drivers make a high-quality impression. Unfortunately, the housings are glued, so I could not get to the drive without destroying it.
The enclosures are designed as a kind of bass reflex/resonator, which certainly benefits the low bass, because it’s really not to be scoffed at.
Unfortunately, we cannot report very much about the chips on the back of the visible PCB, because they are mostly in-house developments or OEM chips about which we do not have any information. One thing is certain: The Bluetooth chip is from Texas Instruments and a module from Microsoft is also on board for Xbox connectivity, which is why you can assume a rather high-quality configuration overall.
The other earpiece contains the 1400mAh lithium polymer battery, which is not plug-and-play replaceable, but could probably be replaced with a similarly sized smartphone battery with 3.7V in an emergency.
Overall, the Stealth 700 Gen 2 makes a very solid and high-quality impression, although I didn’t encounter any metal anywhere except for the core of the headband. Housing, bracket and even the joints are all made of plastic. Although the quality is okay, I would have hoped for a bit more metal considering the RRP of €149.99.
