GPUs Hardware Reviews

Unjustly misunderstood: PNY GTX 1650 XLR8 OC in review – pure use without external supply connection

It is still incomprehensible to me why at the launch of the GeForce GTX 1650 almost exclusively models with external power supply were offered for testing. The cards, which in my view are much more interesting, are exactly the cards without external supply. If an almost tiny card comes out, it is all the more interesting for upstarts in the entry-level segment.

There is no fan stop, the fans also run in the idle with approx. 900 rpm. The threshold value for the speed increase is between 55 and 56 degrees, which can also be seen by the curves. However, there are no return values for the fan control, so only a percentage value can be read from the BIOS specifications. I therefore use a laser for speed monitoring and logging, but I smoothed the curves a bit to hide measurement errors (spikes, drops)

In the Torture-Loop the speeds increase a bit, but again the fan remains pleasingly restrained with just over 1300 rpm.

Let’s look at the measured values again in direct comparison to the Founders Edition as a tabular listing:

  PNY GeForce GTX 1650
XLR8 OC
Fan speeds Maximum 1390 rpm (Gaming, Peak)
Fan speeds Average 1374 rpm (warmed up)
Noise Emission (Air) Average 38.2 to 38.9 dB(A), Closed Case (Peak)
Fan stop
no fan stop
Sound characteristic / hearing impression noisy, light and buzzing engine noises
Coil-feathers/electric noises Inaudible

Sound Spectrum

The measured 38.9 dB(A) are based on the actual speeds from the adjacent gaming loop, as they are almost identical in the closed and open structure.

On the left we see the engine and bearing noises in the lower frequency range, but on the far right we do not see any of the usual spikes of the voltage converters. In the middle we recognize the demolition noises of the air flow. This can be left to stand, because it is still acceptable in sum for such a simple solution.
