We have already tested several inexpensive in-ears from the Chinese manufacturer SoundPeats, and so far they have all scored with a decent price-performance ratio and rich bass. New models are tirelessly introduced to the market and with the Engine 4, enough new features have been added that I dared to take another look.
To the manufacturer itself there is not too much information and the few known to me I had already mentioned in the last articles. The brand was launched around 2010 by an unnamed Chinese manufacturer and funded via the Kickstarter platform. The idea was to develop and distribute high-quality, but affordable in-ear headphones, which the company has succeeded in my eyes. The headphones tested so far were all worth the money for the prices in the range of 35-50€ and all three pairs are still in regular use today – all without problems!
With the Engine 4, some updated or new features were introduced, which increased the MSRP of this model to about 65€. In practice, however, these Earbuds will again be regularly discounted and more likely to be around 50€. Before I continue to beat around the bush, I’ll unbox them first.
Unboxing
The outer box is constructed as a two-piece made of sturdy cardboard. A product picture adorns the front, while the technical data is listed on the back. All in all, the packaging makes a very good impression.
But the new packaging is not only a successful upgrade in terms of presentation, the environment will also be happy about the reduced use of plastics. Instead of foam, the charging box is embedded in a form made of cardboard.
Only a scratch protection foil around the charging box, a small sticker on the charging contacts of the earbugs and – probably also for hygienic reasons – a small bag for the enclosed rubber nubs (eartips). All made of matte foil that feels like a recycled material.
The complete package contents:
The Earbuds in the charging box:
Thanks to magnetic contacts, the Engine 4 also “snap” back into the charging box practically by themselves in the correct charging position.
Both the charging box and the Earbuds themselves make a much higher quality impression than the predecessor models.
With a little over 6 grams of weight per Earbud, the Engine 4 are 50-100% heavier than the previously tested models, but in practice you hardly notice the extra weight.
