Results and conclusion
Now that the setup is finally behind us, the fruits of the hard work can be harvested. On Windows, you can simply mount the NAS in Explorer or even map it as a network drive using Letter. That’s enough of the wall of text (at least with pictures), so let’s get straight to the hard facts and figures:
And if you transfer a large file directly via the file explorer, the gigabit connection can be well utilized:
If you have a “mixed” transfer with many small and medium-sized files, the speed drops a bit in the meantime, of course, but remains at a respectable level:
I quickly put together a dashboard with the most important displays, this is what it looks like at the end of over 120 GB of data transfer at a time:
And even the hard drives can only smile tiredly, at just 32°C you really don’t have to worry.
In the end, all I can really say is that everything worked amazingly well. Apart from the pure printing time, there are hardly any complex parts that require a high-precision printer. And the assembly is almost self-explanatory as well, it took longer to set up. The 8GB of RAM I installed here are completely underpowered, even with 4GB and OpenMediaVault swapped out into RAM, you would still have reserves left. The old processor also manages the data transfer well.
So I would consider this little project a success throughout. If you already own a 3D printer, you can build your own NAS very inexpensively, which will meet the vast majority of requirements. Fortunately, I have also received a lot of encouragement and feedback, whether here or on other platforms. Thank you very much for this! A common request was to make the NAS a little larger to fit a standard ITX motherboard and low-profile cooler.
And I’ll put it this way … I finished the “Homerserver Edition”, tested it and made the files available as well. If it is suitable, there will be a part three with maximum expansion!
