Metro 2033: Ingenious End Time Drama with Tunnel View and Lots of Information about The Story and Location | 10 years ago

Pretty much exactly 10 years ago, I not only played and benchmarked Metro 2033, but also examined the story behind it. Because I was not only once in Moscow and know the also Metro from my own excursions quite well. I was also able to find something new, because as a student and foreigner, in the days of the Soviet regime, one always had the ubiquitous watchdog beside you and the information was, let's say politely, filtered a little. But I, too, have been walking in the tubes before - without a comfortable train and coin insertion.

Let us now follow in the footsteps of the young Russian Artyom across the Moscow Metro. On our hero's menu are mutant monsters, nasty traps, unsympathetic bandits, tunnels, shafts and corridors. Do we already know? Jain!  You can tell the author is a Fallout fan. The aisles and shafts have the charm of Fallout3, the nice green mushrooms we have already seen there. In addition, the oversubscribed monsters and localities. Finally, a pinch of Hellgate London and the game is ready? Jumped too short. Even if there may be a lot of parallels – the game is everything, just no plagiarism.

The Ukrainian Studio 4A, which now employs many former S.T.A.L.K.E.R. designers, has created and implemented an oppressive end-time story together with the Russian author Dmitry Gluchowsky. Admittedly, not much remains of the book as an original, but the author himself has attached great importance to the fact that the chapters are not simply replayed. The characters, the location and the frame plot are still the same, added tasks and a lot of action. In no case has this harmed.

Similar to the book "Metro 2033", the plot takes place in the tunnels and catacombs of the Moscow Metro. And so, 20 years after a devastating war, in which the upper world is radioactively irradiated, the player finds his character: a young Russian named Artyom, who leaves his safe haven because of a small thing, becomes his own alter ego in this inhospitable and almost unreal world. After only a few minutes you are one with the surroundings and the mixed people who meet you at every turn.

On the surface, it's even worse.

This actual shooter is peppered with violence, mysticism, supernatural phenomena and a story that constantly invents and builds itself up. At this point it is also necessary to emphasize the many sequences, which perfectly underpeach the entry into the respective chapters. This is not just a simple accessory, some scenes already have the character of a feature film implementation. Forgotten are the eternal monologues and tenacious transitions of the novel template, here action is delivered pure and there is hardly any time to rest. Of course, one is only successful if it is possible to control the character safely through the action. And that is exactly the question we are going to look into next.
