Now let’s move on to AJA, a streaming benchmark that is popular in the industry and among system houses. The program simulates an uncompressed stream, in our case in Ultra HD and 10 bit RGB. While the reading performance of the representatives of the respective interface is very similar, we see some glaring differences in writing! While the MSI Spatium M480, which was just slightly outperformed in 3DMark, even hammers the stream into the NAND faster than the rest, the Samsung 980 Pro, which is just faster, falls behind strongly when writing.
The benchmark is a merciless cache killer and also heats up the SSDs very strongly. But you also have to be fair and consider what frame rate you actually need. All M.2 SSDs tested here are capable of 60 FPS in uncompressed material. Only the external SSD and the hard drive have a bigger problem because they are simply not suitable for this. For example, I record the streams in my own studio already compressed, so the 12 to 15 MB/s of the 2.5″ SSD in my portable USB3 box are sufficient.
If you are looking for SSDs for recording, you should primarily look at the durability; the theoretical data rates are rather something for the shop window. Because you don’t really need them.
