When existing is not enough: Pandora and Pyra!
Of course, handhelds and consoles there are some. Many different form factors and specifications are already covered in the market. But what if you have your own idea? If you are Michael, you successfully make them a reality with the help of the community! The own Linux console had to be able to play old text adventures with text input, be portable and have enough power. Special attention was paid to the Pandora’s workmanship, feel and usability.
Furthermore, a high battery life was also on the priority list. Once a hardware developer friend was on board, a case manufacturer from Asia and various emulator programmers, the journey began! Under the auspices of Michael and three others, the OpenPandora saw the light of day and was delivered around the globe.
As the name suggests, it’s the unmentionable box that should never be opened according to mythology, but is always open at Michael’s; Open Soft and Hardware is the premise here! The handheld / mini PC enjoyed great popularity among people around the globe, so it was time for a successor.
The Pyra is the official successor of the Pandora and comes with improvements in every subsystem of the hardware. The CPU has been replaced, and a 5-inch 720p LCD with touchscreen is responsible for work or even the favored pixel mash.
Data connections are established with WLAN and Bluetooth in line with the times, and the device’s keyboard now has an illuminated keyboard. In addition, housing production was relocated to the EU. If I were to write an in-depth article about the Pyra or Pandora, it would go beyond the capacity of this article, because there is simply too much to say and explain.
Nevertheless, my intention was simply that you can bring such devices to the market even if you are not a studied hardware developer or invest millions of Euros. The only important thing is the people behind the project, and where there’s a will, there’s a way, as we all know.
