Radeon Super Resolution – quality check in static image comparison
Of course, a static image comparison can be discussed controversially now. I’m not necessarily a fan of it either, but it best shows the strengths and weaknesses. Whether you have to reproach AMD for this as massive criticism, or whether you can ignore it for various reasons, is up to you in the end. I will write my opinion about it, and I emphasize that it is only my opinion and I do not claim to be universally valid!
4K native vs. RSR (1800p)
We are now playing find the mistake in the right image. In the area of the soldier in the foreground, you can’t really see any difference. This is also difficult in the depth, because AMD sharpens the picture quite well. It fits like this! You can’t even resharpen, that’s not possible with RSR enabled and also completely unnecessary.
4K native vs. RSR (1800p details 180% magnification)
RSR doesn’t cut such a bad figure here. The bush in the foreground is sharpened well, and it’s still all right in depth. A few details are lost on the buildings, especially the pharmacy sign and the small lamp to the right. Quite frankly, it doesn’t bother me! It’s just a pity that the FPS gain is so meager that the render resolution has to be lowered even further.
4K native vs. RSR (1440p)
From a player’s perspective, of course, you can see a difference in a direct comparison. But it is easily playable!
4K native vs. RSR (1440p details 180% magnification)
Yes, you can already see a very clear loss of detail here. What isn’t there, you can try to sharpen afterwards, but that doesn’t make it visible in the end. You can criticize that now, but you don’t have to! Probably DLSS can do that better, maybe FSR 2.0. But honestly, who plays like that? I can’t walk around 180% magnified in the running game. Matter of taste!
4K native vs. RSR (1080p)
Now hand on heart, who wouldn’t want to play the game like that? With a 4K monitor and 60 FPS +, that’s still perfectly fine with RSR for me! Of course, the maximum loss of detail is already apparent here, but the re-sharpening still makes the overall image appear crisp.
4K native vs. RSR (1080p details 180% magnification)
If I had to play the game zoomed in like this, I’d rather do without the extra FPS! There is no need to say more about this, everyone can work it out for themselves. I suggest before we get to NVIDIA Image Scaling, we close RSR with an inventory for Ghost Recon Wildlands.
