AMD has released its long-awaited Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) technology in the Adrenaline Preview driver. AFMF is an upscaling technology that allows gamers to double or even triple their frame rates without sacrificing quality. The technology works by combining two frames from gameplay and then upscaling them using a proprietary algorithm. AFMF is available in twelve games, including Starfield, Red Dead Redemption 2 and Forza Horizon 5, and AMD’s new technology is an important step in improving PC game performance. AFMF offers gamers an easy way to increase frame rates without compromising graphics quality.
AMD Fluid Motion Frames: Only available for RDNA 3 GPUs
AMD’s new Fluid Motion Frames technology is currently only compatible with RDNA 3 GPUs. The current Adrenaline Preview driver, version 23.30.01.02, only supports the Radeon RX 7900, RX 7800, RX 7700 and RX 7600. The feature is still in preview and AMD is working to expand it to more GPUs in the future. Gamers can provide feedback on the feature via AMD’s bug tool.
In addition, we are excited to share an early preview of the latest AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition release, offering gamers the opportunity to preview the forthcoming driver-based version of AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) technology.
AFMF allows AMD Radeon RX 7000 series graphics users to increase their framerates with frame interpolation technology across thousands of DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 game titles. We encourage gamers to check out AFMF and provide feedback directly to AMD using the bug reporting tool.
AMD has unveiled its new Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) technology, which is being positioned as an alternative to NVIDIA’s Frame Generation. AFMF is an upscaling technology that allows gamers to double or even triple their frame rates without sacrificing quality. AFMF works by combining two frames from gameplay and then upscaling them using a proprietary algorithm. The technology is currently available in a preview version and supports only 12 DX12 titles, including Forspoken, Starfield and Red Dead Redemption 2. Compared to NVIDIA’s Frame Generation, AFMF has some advantages. AFMF does not require developer-level support because it is already built into the graphics drivers. This makes it easier and faster for developers to implement AFMF in their games. AFMF is also capable of doubling or even tripling frame rates, while NVIDIA’s Frame Generation only offers a 50% frame rate increase. However, AFMF also has some disadvantages. AFMF is still in an early stage of development and can therefore cause interference. AFMF is also less effective than NVIDIA’s Frame Generation in maintaining image quality.
AMD has announced that its Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) technology will be exclusive to the Radeon RX 7000 series for now. The feature does not officially support other Radeon GPUs, including the RDNA 2 and Vega architectures. This move by AMD could be temporary. AFMF is still in the testing phase and AMD could add support for other architectures in the future. There are several possible reasons why AMD decided to limit AFMF to RDNA 3 GPUs for now. One possibility is that the technology is too demanding for older GPUs. AFMF uses a proprietary algorithm that may require more processing power than other upscaling technologies. Another possibility is that AMD initially wants to use AFMF as a marketing tool for the Radeon RX 7000 series. The feature is a powerful upscaling tool that can significantly increase frame rates in games. AMD could use AFMF to promote the performance of its new GPUs.
We have made a technical preview of @amd Fluid Motion Frames available for those of you that would like to begin testing and experiencing it with us. We would like your feedback as we continue to work on the official release. We hope you like it. https://t.co/c59gC4Ki0G
