Technical data
Let’s start this section with the mandatory table
Features
In terms of features, Sharkoon restricts itself to the basics with the SGK50 S4. I welcome this decision immensely, because it contributes significantly to reducing costs and addresses precisely those areas that often drive up costs without any sense at all or only make the marketing department happy. The step of releasing a keyboard that can be configured completely WITHOUT a software is also quite brave. And I can already spoil: This works flawlessly!
Configuration without software?!
Yes, please! What initially sounds like a severe limitation is almost completely negligible in practice. All important features can be configured or used conveniently via key combination:
And if you’re honest, how often do you really mess around with the settings? I for my case actually only to adjust the lighting and that also happens relatively rarely. For me, that would be the only real criticism of the softwareless controller, that you can’t control the lighting “per button” and assign it a completely individual color. If one of the manufacturers reads my articles: It would be relatively easy to implement the lighting via RGB value more or less freely mixed by the user. It doesn’t have to be adjustable for each color in all 256 possible values to get the full 16.8 million colors. Even with 16 gradations per color, you can cover quite a few shades.
Current measurement
Of course, I measured the current consumption again for our nerds. However, you don’t have to worry about too high currents with the SGK50 S4, because with a maximum of 140mA you stay well below the specification.
