Summary and conclusion
In conclusion, all I can really say is that more or less what I already expected came out. Top of the line processors from a few years ago have aged gracefully depending on the application. If you look at performance in games and productivity alone, they are still doing quite well. Or rather, they can still keep up with the current mid-range.
But to now take away from the article that you should stock up on cheap Socket 2011-3 CPUs would ignore the other half of the truth. Under load, the overclocked 5960X pulls a staggering 250 watts according to HWInfo. The Ryzen 5 3600 needs just 70-80 watts and delivers comparable results. Functioning motherboards from reputable manufacturers have become rare and expensive. With this socket you can’t go anywhere, the most powerful CPU for this platform would probably be the i7-6950X and then that’s the end of the line. For experiments like these or maybe home servers with many PCIe devices, X99 is still a good choice. But even for budget systems, I would rather recommend the Ryzen platform, which is now very cheap if bought used. If you invest in a good motherboard, you got an realistic upgrade path to an Ryzen 5000 CPU later.
With this article I’m particularly curious to read what your opinion is on the subject. So please feel free to leave me a comment!
