I had a family member in need for a new gaming system to replace an AMD FX 4000 based computer with a GTX 750 Ti. Bad timing, as we all know. The listings for prebuilt PCs sent to me were even more overpriced than usual and building one myself from new parts wasn’t a good option either. But as luck would have it, a couple of CPUs from the X99 era recently fell into my hands. And to kill two birds with one stone, here is a short introduction to the topic of buying 2011-3 nowadays and whether the Socket is still worthwhile.
Processors
Specifically, I have the once flagship i7-5960X CPU and a Xeon E5-2640 V4 at my disposal. Here are the specifications at a glance:

Regarding the number of cores/threads they don’t have to hide from today’s processors.
And even otherwise, the ravages of time have not yet took too much of a toll at the specifications. As far as the number of PCIe lanes and support for Quad Channel Memory is concerned, things are even worse today than they were 7 years ago. Manufacturers rather push these benefits and features into the expensive prosumer and server segment instead of over-indulging the regular consumer.
