Hardware used
But now enough with the dry theory, hard facts and figures follow! I ran the i7 5960X on the MSI X99A Gaming 7 with an MSI RTX 2080 Ti and also did a full rerun with +1.0 Ghz overclock to 4.50 Ghz allcore.
The whole thing was reliably cooled by the Cooler Master MasterAir 612 Stealth, which I already reviewed some time ago.
My Xeon E5 2640 V4 was used in the X99-RS9 together with an Sapphire RX 5600 XT. During the testing I noticed that HWinfo doesn’t provide realistic CPU temperatures, so I have to blindly trust the cooling performance of the installed SilentiumPC Fera 5 Dual. It did well in my review however and should be able to handle the 90 Watt TDP of the Xeon.
Power for both of these hardware bundles was provided by a Fractal Design Ion Gold 750W. Overclocked to 4.50 Ghz at 1.325 volts, the i7 5960X draws around 250 watts over the 8-pin EPS connector, so I’d rather give it a slightly larger power supply than cheaping out.
To better put the results into perspective, I also ran a Ryzen 5 3600 alongside both X99 systems. You can get it used together with an motherboard for a good price and there is still headroom for improvement with the AM4 socket and newer CPUs.
