Fan control and curves
Cooling only works with a proper airflow and that’s exactly why I looked at the fan curves now. For this purpose I compared the (lower and usual) edge temperature and the fan speeds of the XFX RX 6800 XT Merc 319 16 GB. A second look into the system showed that the hotspot temperature was exactly at the preset tjunction value in the BIOS and therefore the fans suddenly started to run as if there was no tomorrow. After that, everything slowly levels out again and it even gets quieter.
I’m sure this could have been resolved more gently, but it’s also the extreme case. In most normal games you won’t even get that high, so it will almost always end up being around 1200rpm, which you’ll hardly notice as really annoying. And the 330 watts? Fiddlesticks, they don’t even itch the fat cooler.
Noise emission “Volume
If you measure the whole thing in normal operation and without stress, the 33.4 dB(A) of the XFX RX 6800 XT Merc 319 16 GB are a real statement and are in the range of the Sapphire Nitro+. The disadvantage, however, is that you can now also hear the buzzing of the coils a bit more clearly again. Well, you can’t have everything and the good Mr. Lorentz and his power named after him are unfortunately acoustically a bit in the way. But it’s nothing to kill yourself over.
As an interim conclusion, we can state that XFX has created a cooler that not only cools well, but also doesn’t want to be caught in the act acoustically. Only a little lighter could have been the whole thing.
