Today I am testing the fourth and for now last water block for NVIDIA’s top model with the Watercool Heatkiller V Pro on the GeForce RTX 4090 FE. And I can spoil it in advance: all four coolers are very close to each other and the actual differences are only in the appearance and in some areas in the temperature, depending on the block design and routing of the channels. So, apart from appearance, it is rather marginal differences that decide the quality of a product here.
The price is just under 250 Euros and it is thus oriented towards the prices of the products from Corsair and EKWB. However, it is also a full 100 Euros higher than the price of Alphacool’s cooling solution. But does it cool that much better? That’s exactly what we want to find out today and also directly compare all coolers as a showdown at the end. However, you can see what the Heatkiller does differently right after unpacking: For once, the terminal is not on top, but on the back of the card, which is quite charming.
As with the other three coolers, a GeForce RTX 4090 FE is not only expensive, but also still in high demand. The original radiator is almost oversized and as a buyer you hardly have a valid reason to disassemble and rebuild this collector’s item. We will keep this in mind for all those who want to rebuild the card later and possibly sell or replace it.
Update from 06.03.2023
At this point I would like to refer to page 3 and the section with the assembly, where some things seem to have gone wrong and correct this. Ashes on my head, because with three of the four mounting screws was really still a residue of glue from the previous assembly on the board remained, which then pushed itself when tightening between washer and “horseshoe”. The fourth screw was clean, but also here the black guide for the original clamping cross had detached and the washer pushed something under it.
However, nothing had cut deeply there, but the bonding had come off due to the shifting washer. To be fair, we really need to look at these things separately and remain objective. Therefore, I have corrected the text on page three accordingly and also adjusted the conclusion. In addition, there is also a tip with a picture (not just verbally in the conclusion as before), which could be used alternatively as a replacement for the metal washers, because I have rebuilt the cooler again. A separate retest is not necessary, because the temperatures are all congruent with Pertinax washers, the original washers and alternative screws. Solid is solid, so even the temperatures don’t change.
Scope of delivery and accessories
Let’s first unpack the cooling block from the sustainably designed packaging and see what Watercool treats us to. Of course, you get the completely assembled water block including acrylic cover and the already screwed terminal made of acetal including an integrated ARGB LED light bar, an adapter for it on D-RGB Preci-Dip (motherboard), a backplate, a temporarily preassembled dual-slot bracket made of brushed stainless steel, all screws including various washers, matching heat conduction pads, already mounted blind plugs, heat conduction paste and a QR code for the manual.
You don’t get a detailed manual in printed form, not even a quick start guide, which is rather incomprehensible for a purchase price of 250 Euros. The fingering on the smartphone while assembling is really borderline and if you take the detour on the PC via the search on the homepage (click through under support, unfortunately there is nothing in the store article) it does not get better after the download: The PDF consists of an eternally long, single page without paragraph or bookmarks. One scrolls a wolf and reading on the PC is almost borderline. A printout, also of individual sections or pages, for a more convenient assembly is unfortunately technically not possible. But more about that on the next page. Or you can simply skip them.
Technical data at a glance
As usual, I have a summary of the data for you, although the product weight can definitely not be correct.
Unfortunately, there is no external retailer reference for the Heatkiller V Pro yet, so only the store on the Watercool homepage remains.
