Rules were changed, traces were destroyed
The day before the competition starts, everybody uploads the bios versions they intend to use for their motherboards to the forum thread. Everything seems to be going along smoothly. You can still check this today btw if you visit the thread (link). Ironically, I had made a post in that thread before the competition got going, wishing everyone good luck and hoping for no rule changes during the competition – a precursor of what’s to come.
Then March 3rd comes around and things get dicey. A well-known member of the community and in-house overclocker of Asus “safedisk” (https://hwbot.org/user/safedisk/) uploads a new bios for the Z790 Apex motherboard to the thread. He notes that this version is especially fine-tuned for use with the gear 4 mode of the Intel memory controller. This is crucial, because the first stage (which at this point has already started) is about reaching the highest possible memory frequency with a validation in CPU-Z. (https://valid.x86.fr/)
It should be clear to everyone that can read and understand basic English that according to the competition rules, this bios is not legal to use for the first stage of the competition, as it was uploaded to the forum thread after the stage had started. But participants still used this bios, made submissions with it, and substantially improved their results compared to submissions with earlier bios versions.
Of course, this now sparked a heated discussion, as everyone using other motherboards or even people with a Z790 Apex that adhered to the rules are now at a disadvantage. Most of this happened in the Hwbot Discord server, which is free to join (https://discord.com/invite/DWQVaSs) and you can read through it all in the #gskill-world-cup-online-qualifier-2023 channel if you are curious., I have screen grabbed the crucial part for you here. The main Hwbot moderator of the competition then stated in the chat that the rule actually said “approx. when stage starts” (meaning not before stage start) and that by extension bios files uploaded after the competition stage had started are, in fact, legal to use.
Contrary to this, I have screenshots showing the forum thread and the esports.hwbot.org site for the G.Skill OC World Cup 2023 Online Qualifier from before the first stage started, providing clear evidence that this statement by the moderator is in fact false. Consequently this can then only mean that the rules were altered after the fact or that the moderators made a mistake when originally publishing the rules. But neither of that was acknowledged.
This surprised many community members, including me, and needless to say we questioned this statement quite vigorously as this was in complete contrast to what was written in the rules of the competition. This discussion then evolved into a quite heated exchangein the chat room, which you can read for yourself if you are curious. Let’s hope the chat history is still there when you read this – also a precursor of what is to come.
