Well, we’re not doing anything technical today, but it’s certainly a good opportunity to think about what we’re actually celebrating this weekend. Days off or something more? Pentecost, also known as the Feast of the Holy Spirit, has deep spiritual and historical roots that have had a lasting impact on both the religious and cultural landscape. It is a festival of renewal, new beginnings and community. Incidentally, it originates from the Jewish Feast of Weeks, Shavuot, which is celebrated fifty days after Passover. In Christianity, Pentecost marks the end of Easter fifty days after Easter and commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles. This event is regarded as the birth of the Church, as it inspired the disciples of Jesus to carry his teachings into the world.

Pentecost thus symbolizes the beginning of a new era, a time of change and transformation. The Holy Spirit brought courage, wisdom and fellowship to the apostles, who had previously felt fearful and insecure. This event shows us how powerful renewed vision and inspiration can be. It also reminds us that in moments of uncertainty and doubt, a new perspective and inner renewal can have transformative effects. This spiritual renewal that Pentecost symbolizes is not limited to that time, but is still taking place in the hearts of believers today. Incidentally, it is a call to reflection, contemplation and openness to new paths and possibilities for everyone, whether religious or not.
Another central aspect of Pentecost is the importance of community. The descent of the Holy Spirit led to a deeper understanding and a stronger connection between the apostles and the believers. This fellowship formed the foundation for the early church and shows us the importance of coming together and supporting one another in times of change and growth. Community strengthens the individual and makes it possible to achieve greater goals together. In today’s world, where individualism often takes center stage, Pentecost reminds us that we are stronger together and that true renewal is possible through collective effort and mutual support. This should not be forgotten.
In the world of computer technology, we can learn valuable lessons from Pentecost. Technology is evolving rapidly and constantly requires new ideas, innovations and communities working together to achieve these advances. The parallels between Pentecost and the technology industry are remarkable. Both require constant renewal, a flow of new ideas and a strong community to succeed.

Like the Holy Spirit who brought new wisdom and courage to the apostles, we need continuous fresh ideas and innovation in computing. The world of technology is dynamic, and it requires a constant flow of creativity and new approaches to develop relevant and advanced solutions. This could be through new programming languages, revolutionary algorithms or innovative hardware. This constant renewal and innovation are at the heart of technological progress and reflect the spiritual renewal that Pentecost symbolizes. Whether and how one categorizes AI and its opportunities and dangers is up to the observer.
In the technology industry, collaboration is key. Open source projects, developer communities and interdisciplinary teams reflect the Pentecostal idea of community. Through collaboration, great challenges can be overcome and groundbreaking progress can be made. Sharing knowledge and resources leads to a stronger and more innovative technology community. This community makes it possible to overcome obstacles, learn from each other and jointly develop solutions that can change the world. That’s not what we do here in the forum and in user interactions, just on a smaller scale.

Pentecost reminds us of the power of renewal, inspiration and community. You don’t even have to be a believer. These principles are not only important in the spiritual world, but also in the fast-paced and ever-changing world of computer technology. Through renewal and collaboration, we can bring about transformative change in both faith and technology and create a better future. The message of Pentecost – a message of hope, courage and unity – remains relevant and powerful whether viewed in the context of faith or technology. It is a reminder that through inner renewal and collective effort, we are able to achieve great things and bring about positive change in our world.
I don’t want to write any more about this, because I’m now giving myself a little break until after Pentecost. I have just explained the reasons for this. But that doesn’t mean we’re closing down the website in any way. I’m just taking a little bit of pressure off myself and allowing myself a few hours without having to constantly write something new. On Monday, of course, there will be the Golden Bunny prize draw and then, from Tuesday, the full technical broadside again. And I’ll be able to spoil some interesting things, ranging from alloyed heat-conducting soup to the most brutal dezincification possible. Excited? Me too!
