Summary and conclusion
Before I go into a few aspects in more detail, I would like to get rid of a whole list of loose thoughts and conspicuousness:
- The fan has a special connector and no standard 4-pin PWM, which makes it difficult to replace
- The processor is cooled purely passively, the heat sink is not directly in the airflow
- Air is drawn in from the front and blown out the back
- For the installation of 2.5″ SSDs/HDDs, one side of the 3.5″ bracket must be removed
- The installation slots cannot be blocked or locked
- The USB stick with the bootloader can only be removed if the mainboard is removed
- The operating system is installed redundantly on all built-in data carriers
- The Hong Kong time zone is set by default
- The search in the Pictures app searches for the file name
- The two 2.5 GbE ports can be combined via link aggregation
- Some applications open in a new tab when clicked, so can be accessed directly via a link
- No internal power supply, but the external 12V power supply can be easily replaced
- Network tab on the desktop shows transmission rates that are too low
- Some functions require a volume in BTRFS format
If you activate the SSH access, which is switched off by default, the console can be called up with a corresponding program. TerraMaster-OS is based on GNU/Linux, which has been adapted accordingly.
For example, a number of commands have been deactivated, removed or restricted in their function. However, this is not a criticism in itself; such changes are entirely appropriate when focusing on a specific function. Normally you shouldn’t even end up here, all the necessary settings can be accessed from the Web GUI.
Overall, I was quite satisfied with the TerraMaster operating system, all important functions are available and for the most part reasonably implemented. Terra Photos still needs some development work, however, and the current state can only be described as adequate. But I can’t really weigh this point of criticism too heavily, because the manufacturer gives you almost every freedom: You don’t like our picture app? Then just install another one in a container. Are you only interested in the hardware and want to use a different operating system? No problem, by pressing the Remove button you can access the Aptio Setup BIOS and install something else.
I also think the integration of services from some third-party providers is a good thing. Why reinvent the wheel when someone already has a suitable offer. However, the F4-424 model from my test report is not yet really available, at least the recommended retail price of 549.99 euros for the version with Intel N95 CPU and 8GB RAM is available to us. If you take a look at the price comparison at Geizhals.de, this offer is almost alone in the field. Nobody else currently offers the combination of 4 bays, quad-core x86 CPU, 8GB RAM and 2.5GbE LAN. And for the most similar offer, a TS-462-8G with only 2 instead of 4 cores, you only pay 20 euros less. The two-year warranty doesn’t make me cheer, but other manufacturers don’t offer more than that at no extra charge.
Compared to the 2-bay version F2-424 with a price of 399.99 euros, I find the 150 euro surcharge to the F4-424 a bit steep, as both share a large part of the specifications. Nevertheless, I would always go for a 4-bay NAS, the jump from RAID1 to RAID5 enables much better price/performance when using the hard disks. Overall, a good overall package with good performance and low power consumption has been put together here, in which the manufacturer does not try to tie the customer to its own ecosystem.
The test sample was provided by TerraMaster without obligation. There was and is no influence on the tests and results. There was also no compensation for expenses and no obligation to publish.
