Remote access
If you want to access the NAS from outside your own LAN, there are basically two direct options. One is to set up the TNAS.online portal, which is provided by the manufacturer itself.
This allows access from almost anywhere with just a few clicks, as long as the device is switched on and connected to the internet.
Alternatively, it is also possible to use a dynamic DNS provider.
Various templates are already available; these services were listed at the time of testing:
- Aliyun
- DynDNS
- No-IP
- FreeDNS
- DuckDNS
- Dynv6
- FreemyIP
- DNSomatic
- Spdyn
- ZoneEdit
- oray
Manual configuration can also be carried out. Access via VPN to your own home network can of course also be set up. Integration for TailScale is also offered.
Multi-factor authentication
Secure login is particularly important when access is possible from the Internet. Fortunately, a one-time password or 2-factor authentication is supported.
However, I find the requirement that a mobile device must first be connected using the app before the function can be selected somewhat strange. This is because the generated QR code can also be easily used with another authenticator app, such as Authy.
Automated routines
If you want to repeat certain tasks over and over again, automation is a good option. For example, a wizard can be used to regularly execute console commands, activate services or delete the recycle bin.
Basically okay for now, but a few more templates wouldn’t hurt.
Checking the data carriers and warning
The option for automatic SMART checks is also hidden in the data carrier management menu, which could perhaps also appear in the wizard.
And if you are there anyway, you should also check this box:
It would probably also make sense for these tests to be active by default.
Independent copying of USB devices
Here we are directly confronted with two problems: Firstly, the F4-424 has no USB ports on the front and secondly, there is no suitable tool pre-installed.
At least for the second point there is a simple solution, namely the USB Copy Assistant from the App Center.
This makes it very easy to create a corresponding task that copies the data from a USB stick to a specific target directory, for example.
And then activate the trigger on insertion in the settings and set a beep at the start and end.
Cache for the main memory
With the Hyper Cache function, for example, we can put some fire under the butt of an existing network of conventional hard disks.
You can choose between three different behaviors, which are described in more detail in the linked documentation.
