Software
One of the most important aspects of a NAS are the features in the operating system. What follows is a tour of the basic functions with a focus on what I consider to be some important aspects, a detailed list of every little thing would go beyond the scope here.
Incidentally, the background image was preset in exactly the same way. Curious choice, I wonder if one of the developers immortalized his dog?
Let’s come back to the hard disk management. The volume created on the NVMe SSD during the initial setup can also be found here.
With two additional 2.5″ SATA SSDs from Samsung, I create another storage pool for test purposes in RAID0 mode. Alternatively, RAID1, JBOD and TRAID are also available. TRAID is a combination of RAID5 and RAID1, in which data carriers of different sizes can be used. Unusable storage space on hard disks is still unavoidable depending on the combination, but is reduced by splitting the data sets.
TerraMaster goes into more detail on the TRAID help page. In any case, the option to expand the storage pool at a later stage is practical. Either by adding more hard disks or by replacing them with larger ones. For example, you could initially only have one HDD in the pool, as here, and then add another one later.
Especially if you want to set up access from outside your own network at a later date, it is advisable to take a look at the security advisor.
Based on defined “best practice” guidelines, it checks the current status and identifies potential vulnerabilities and solutions. For example, the password I have chosen is strong enough.
One advantage of the BTRFS file system is regular snapshots, i.e. versioning of the stored files.
So we follow the hint, which sends us directly to the appropriate setting.
Strict firewall rules can also be configured, which only allow access to certain services from specified IP addresses or ports, for example.
With this function, however, you should know exactly what you are doing. In the worst case, you could lock yourself out, and the system will also issue another warning.
The suggested change to the standard ports is a bit like “security through obscurity”. You can do this, but in the event of a concrete attack, a port scan of the network will also find the new ports.
If you really want to be on the safe side and are not planning any access via the Internet anyway, you can also switch on a special local-only mode.
At least in theory, this function could also be used after a successful attack to restore everything in peace.
Otherwise, there is also a lot to discover in the general settings. Namely the function to switch to the only correct time format: DD/MM/YYYY and 24 hours!
In the network settings, I was able to make sure once again that my brand new 2.5GbE switch was working properly. Lo and behold, the full bandwidth of 2500 Mbps was enabled by both the switch and the NAS.
By the way, a shared SMB network drive is created and activated directly during setup; the user we created is authorized.
Access is then possible either via the corresponding path in Windows Explorer, or alternatively the TerraMaster NAS also comes with a file explorer in the Web GUI.
