Feature checklist – Part 1
The following list contains what I consider to be the most important functions of a NAS. In each case I look at whether this function is available and if so, how it has been implemented. If you think something is missing here, you are welcome to send additions as a comment in the forum. My experience relates to TOS version 5.1.
App
Access from a smartphone is of course also possible via a web browser. Advanced functions such as automatic data backup have been implemented with the TNAS mobile 3 app, available for Android and iOS.
Applications
The functions of the NAS itself can also be expanded with an App Center. A rough overview of the available applications is summarized by the manufacturer in the TOS5 documentation.
In addition to the additional programs maintained directly by the manufacturer, many other apps are also available in the Community Store.
Virtualization / Docker
In my opinion, however extensive the integrated app store may be, it only becomes truly outstanding with the support of containers.
And native integration is provided by TerraMaster with the Docker Manager; alternatively, Portainer or even VirtualBox are also available.
And if I have compared it correctly, the images simply access Docker Hub directly. Accordingly, many containers can be installed with just a few clicks.
I’ll show it here using OpenSpeedTest(Github / Docker) as an example, which we can use later for the speed test.
Depending on the project, it is therefore child’s play to get the respective application running on the F4-424.
Backup from the computer
Again, there are several ways to achieve this. Via TerraSync, for example, certain folders can be permanently synchronized to the NAS, including versioning. If, on the other hand, you want to back up the entire computer, this can be achieved either via the integration for the AOMEI Backupper or the Centralized Backup from TerraMaster.
With the help of the client software, which can be downloaded directly from the NAS, the devices can be backed up centrally.
Picture gallery
Even though there are now smartphones with 1TB storage, very few people carry their entire stock of pictures around with them every day. Transferring pictures to the NAS has several advantages: Data backup, access from anywhere and potentially a better preparation or overview.
So let’s take a closer look at the native Web Photos app, which can be downloaded from the TerraMaster store. After installation, we are first informed that media indexing must be activated for use.
So we promptly activated it and uploaded a colorful selection of images as a test.
Thanks to the fast 2.5GbE connection, the transfer is quick and I then ticked the optional face recognition option in the settings.
Immediately after the upload, it takes a moment for the preview images to be generated. If videos were also uploaded, they must first be converted for playback on a website, depending on the source format.
Unfortunately, the face recognition or grouping into a folder is not particularly reliable, only two people were recognized. And as you can see from the picture above, there would be potential for more.
What worked well, however, was the export of metadata and assignment to specific locations.
For example, albums of a vacation are created automatically, even if the various images were saved separately from each other in the underlying folder structure.
