Prices and P/L in Ultra HD with 3840 x 2160 pixels (2160p)
In Ultra-HD and without frame rate accelerators like DLSS, FSR or XeSS, we see the well-known weakness of the Radeon cards. The only straggler here is the RTX 3080 10G, which ended up in last place because it ran out of memory in Ultra HD in FarCry 6 and completely spoiled the overall result with a measly 6 FPS. But the 10 GB is a bit borderline these days and no longer sustainable for Ultra HD. Therefore, I would only consider this card up to WQHD – and with DLSS, which ends up being the same. But more on that in a moment.
Even though the price again pushes the Radeons to the front as usual, the real recommendation here is called GeForce RTX 3090, at least when it comes to the good balance of playability and price. And we can also see that Ada still has to let out a lot of price feathers, because the ratio is not really right here yet. Despite the exorbitant performance.
If you use DLSS or FSR/XeSS, the cards are reshuffled, especially since DLSS from 2.x still looks much better. And the inexpensive GeForce RTX 3080 10G also smells the morning breeze again, because with DLSS it renders in WQHD again and thus in the actual feel-good oasis of this card. Otherwise, the NVIDIA cards are again in the front, just like without accelerators.
In terms of price-performance ratio, the small GeForce RTX 3080 10G and the faster RTX 3090 are even ahead of the two AMD cards. The inexpensive Radeon RX 6800XT is significantly slower as a UHD card even with FSR. I wouldn’t do it that way.
Other applications – rendering
I admit, the Blender and OptiX thing is an extreme example. But when I render the igoBOT, you notice the difference all too clearly. There are certainly alternatives up to ProRender, but even in programs like Maya 2021, where you can use good render plugins like Arnold, I would currently rather bet on the green cards. Even in Rhino. This is also true for Inventor Pro. Especially since the NvEnc of the Ampere cards is unbeatable compared to AMD’s AMF and you don’t create any CPU load when streaming. OBS is also no fun with the Radeons, and the Time Line in Premiere Pro is barely enjoyable as a preview in real time.
Summary and conclusion
If you want it to be green and with more features, you can definitely go for a GeForce RTX 3080 10G up to QHD and with UHD including DLSS. Those who still get hold of a GeForce 3090 at a low price will certainly not have made a bad purchase, because Ada makes itself scarce and expensive. However, you will have to hurry for the GeForce RTX 3090, because the availability is already decreasing daily. The fact that the Radeon RX 6900XT is currently being virtually sold off is surely primarily due to the high stocks and the low customer demand, which I don’t want to comment on. Because actually the price is almost unbeatable.
The bottom line is that you can definitely go for the RTX 3000 series if you can’t or don’t want to wait for Ada or RDNA3. It probably won’t get much cheaper. Just tighter. So now you have to decide (or wait). Actually, you always do it wrong somehow – one way or the other.
