No, I don’t want to accuse Ubisoft and the friendly support of AMD with Far Cry 6 of anything, because it can’t be proven and in the end it only reinforces the general trend towards more and more video memory. Whether one would have really needed it from a technical point of view, that remains to be seen. The somewhat subdued implementation of ray tracing effects can be understood from AMD’s point of view, knowing how hip a current Radeon could become if overdone. So they prefer to underdo it at Ubisoft, even if it then offers little added value visually. The main thing is to get in.
However, if they had been as gentle with the HD texture pack, then today’s article probably wouldn’t even exist. Because one thing you also have to realize unfortunately, it doesn’t bring that much HD into the game either, only into the memory. Even the dashboard of the statesman’s old car is so pixelated in Ultra HD with HD Pack that you really have to ask yourself where the over 12 GB of memory actually got lost. Some other parts also look rather denatured and dehydrated, but far from crisp. There are also such places in Extra-Spicy, but not only.
Well, you could have known and who is so cheeky and then also with a GeForce RTX 3080 Ti 12 GB to play the good Far Cry 6 in Ultra HD, if you are already pointed out to the magic 12 GB minimum limit during the installation of the game? Me, for example, because it’s usually enough, as it almost always has been so far. Close, but went like that. Well, as life goes with a GeForce RTX 3090 Ultra-Light, we habitually move the slider all the way to the right and fire up LG’s 55″ OLED with 3840 x 2160 pixels. Yeah, and then? This is still quite acceptable at the beginning with the 5 to 8 GB in VRAM, but woe betide you if you play for a few minutes.
With a GeForce RTX 3080 you’re warned, with a GeForce RTX 2080 Ti it is not different. Just missing is also over and after the memory is full (due to allocating), shortage management is announced and everything chugs along foot lame with under 8 or under 5 FPS (RTX 2080 Ti). Sometimes the game even recovers (once map plus fast travel as a workaround), but most of the time it’s over and you restart unnerved or screw down the settings snorting and nail the HD textures on the binary garbage.
What annoys me, however, is the fact that even a GeForce RTX 3080 Ti is taken into the fold, according to the motto, if you can’t get a decent FPS with the Radeon RX 6800(XT) in Ultra HD, then we don’t begrudge the other cards either. At least you get this somewhat tasteless impression when everything runs at up to 80 FPS, only to sporadically drop to 8 FPS as well. The 12 GB is barely torn but clearly enough to make this card crash as well. Twice I even lost the game at the same time. Sound is runnung, picture is frozen. Then desktop.
Fact is, here of course NVIDIA’s memory ambition takes revenge once more and it’s certainly not a complete coincidence in return that it’s an AMD title that was calculated so precisely that you can only send all the green UHD cards to the start with a diet menu and no HD texture supplement. However, the fact that the RTX 3080 Ti is brought into the capsized memory boat is a bit delicate and seems like a belated revenge for Cyberpunk 2077. So this time the HD texture pack is effectively the ray tracing of the red avenger and it actually works amazingly well.
Let’s call it, if that’s really what you might think, balancing justice. Anyway, I’m looking forward to seeing what comes next. I’ve got plenty of popcorn. Memory doesn’t.
