The ear cushions
The two cushions are attached to the respective ear cup with small noses, which unfortunately is proprietary. According to NZXT’s own FAQs, replacement parts are only offered in the event of an RMA during the warranty period. As this is limited to only 2 years, the headset effectively becomes a disposable product after 2 years, as nothing else fits. For me personally, this is an absolute deal breaker, as anyone who thinks about the dramas surrounding the PU cushions at companies like Beyerdynamic should be forewarned. I don’t believe that the material used here is somehow higher quality.
The ear pads are very thick, taking on one of the necessary joint movements to adapt to the shape of the head. Unfortunately, the foam is much too fluffy and unstable to guarantee a reproducible fit. Yes, it fits softly, but for optimal sound, all of this is completely suboptimal. I would wish for replaceable pads and real memory foam instead of such uncontoured lard cookers. Because there is also no ventilation. The microclimate quickly moves towards subtropics after prolonged use.
Teardown
Let’s take the ear cups apart for a moment. We see the already mentioned plastic holders at the ends of the fork. Here, plastic rubs against plastic, and at some point, this small part will give way. Again, the short warranty period and the unclear situation with replacement parts leave a rather queasy feeling. After all, they want 100 euros for it, which I do not see as value for money with the headset. Without a USB dongle, that’s not even 10 USD FOB, sorry. We actually see a typical 35 euro retail classic with a 15 euro USB dongle. Consequently, I arrive at a retail price of around 50 to 60 euros, if the production costs are not even 15 euros. The 100 euros are not plausible.
The small 40 mm neodymium driver sits in a glued-in chamber, which also completely rules out a loss-free exchange. Such drivers don’t cost 50 cents and if it should be the usual suspects from companies like Shenzhen Xuanda Electronics Co, Ltd, then even considerably less. The small 10 cent board is from GuangDong Kingshine Electronic Technology Co Ltd and connects the socket to the rest.
The glued-on chamber has a small opening protected with gauze for sounding and pressure equalization. It didn’t help much though, the weak bass is a bigger disaster. But we’ll see that on the next page with the measurements.
