Software
At this point, I unfortunately have to give free rein to my displeasure and rant once more. The MSI Center is, in my opinion, by far the worst of all the overloaded RGB and control programs. I’ve already ranted about this in the MSI Vigor GK71 Sonic review as well as in the article about the MSI Clutch GM51 Lightweight mouse and unfortunately nothing has changed at this point.
The program, which is a good 500MB in size, greets us on the splash screen with all of its installable modules/items/whatever, with practically every functionality requiring a separate installation. This is not a bad idea, because you only have to install what you really need, but in practice it does not work as well as it sounds.
The hardware monitoring is a nice feature and there are also control programs for the fan speed etc., but for such monitoring I prefer to use more extensive (and yet much leaner) tools like HWInfo in the end.
In the settings, all “telemetry options” are enabled ex works so that you can collect data diligently. Of course, this improves the user experience, which is logical.
I already introduced Mystic Light in the articles linked above. It is a real pity that MSI implements such a rudimentary light control. That is, if it works at all. In any case, it’s not due to a cluttered Windows, the installation is only three months old and still almost virgin.
When the program starts, there are a handful of effects available, where you can define rainbow or static color, but basically no own color range. At least you can even set the colors per key for static lighting.
While I could at least still program the keys and record macros on the GK71 via the “Gaming Gear” module/plugin/whatever, the program totally fails again at this point. First update:
Then wait for minutes until the software starts after installation:
Then to end up suggesting live updates to supposedly uninstalled drivers or more bloatware instead of letting me into the keyboard’s settings.
I really tried it, completely reinstalled the MSI Center and then got the stuff displayed again. I wonder how bluetooth and sound work all this time, even though there’s supposedly no driver installed at all? I’m sorry I can’t show you the settings, but unfortunately that just didn’t work. More about this in a moment in the conclusion
