MSI Geforce RTX 2080 Super Gaming X Trio review – Heavy chunk on soft soles

Summary

Die neue, aufgesuperte RTX 2080 Super macht auch im MSI-Gaming-X-Trio-Hosenanzug eine souverän staatstragende Figur. Distinguished by a policy of soft tones, this card manages to keep a really cool head, despite the waste heat of a whopping 270 watts. But we would have reached the end of the political puns, because the drinking habits of the Super-2080 are already a bit bad on the border with rural areas compared to the much more efficient RTX 2080 Ti. Of course, you don't have to give a briefing to the drinking home, but it shows once again the limits of TU104, which even MSI cannot skip.

The chip is squeezed out to the finish line and you can only be glad that MSI is using the fat trio cooler of the MSI RTX 2080 Ti Gaming X Trio gallantly here, so as not to take any thermal risk. In sum, the technical implementation fits really well, right down to the board with the 10 real phases. The fact that when power is inseuated, approx. 16 Watts "somehow" being "smuggled" on top, I have noticed many times with MSI cards, but it at least brings with it the more stable boost clock. That MSI has also found a way to pack a few small extra watts despite boost and BIOS limits as well as the restrictive rail monitoring – let's just call it sports spirit and free entry.

The weight is again brutal with a little more than 1.5 kilos and one should consider how to relieve the poor motherboard a little. The accessories trade is allowed to celebrate. The enormous height also causes waste heat jams if the side wall is too close, i.e. the housing is too narrow overall. But all this is whining at the highest level and so in the end nothing stands in the way of a buying tip, if it must be a 2080 Super and it might not be enough for the Ti-sister.

Conclusion

Well, now it's coming, the good old price question. And that's where everyone has to be quite brave, because it's kind of the fine cut at MSI with the 810-euro icing. You get an RTX 2080 Super at KFA2 almost 100 euros cheaper at the moment, which then almost compensates for the price of a water block. That is precisely why we really need to think carefully about where to set the premises and where the understanding ends. Ear vs. Reason?

Why did I still take the buy tip? This card is almost frighteningly quiet and it also shows that with a little (more) effort you can still keep up with water cooling. The boost does its name all credit and the card is almost inaudible even under full load when the lid is too. Precisely because it is aimed at all those who do not want to build water cooling, it is suddenly an interesting part again. Even despite the somewhat high price, because you can then save yourself the Wsasserblock.
