System construction
I don’t need much performance in my NAS, low power consumption is much more important to me. Even though I’ve been playing around in home server territory with TrueNAS Core lately, it’s back to basics here. And it does so with a “pure” NAS operating system: OpenMediaVault. This doesn’t need many resources and does everything I need here.
An ASRock Q1900-ITX with soldered CPU and passive cooling therefore forms the core, joined by an economical 4GB of RAM. An inexpensive PCIe to 2x SATA expansion card allows a total of 6x SATA to be connected, just right for this case.
The N1 specifies the SFX form factor for a power supply, which is why I use an SFX Power 3 with 300 watts from be quiet!

This is not modular, but relatively inexpensive. And we have enough storage space in front of the power supply for the excess cables anyway.
A 120GB SSD, which I still had left, takes over the task of the operating system partition this time. The N1 has reserved an extra space above the power supply for a 2.5″ drive, so that no slot for the mass storage is lost in the front. For this, the hard disks from my last project are used again, provided by Toshiba.

With a total of 32TB of “RAW” storage, you can get by for quite a while, but I opted for a RAID5 here, effectively losing the storage from one drive for some safety in case of failure.
Theoretically, I could even add another 3.5″ hard drive to have the Jonsbo N1 fully populated. But I can still do that if I run out of memory.
