Tool-Time and hardware store shenanigans
Solid chrome vanadium alloy screwdrivers for under 8 euros? Dream on, or go to the hardware store of your distrust! Or better leave it. Yes, as is well known, the urge to play dies last and I thought to test the recently purchased tool as Plan B (tool box was still in the warehouse because of the renovation foiled, hardware store was right on the way) once on the composition …
Well, I really do not want to take away the illusion that there are also bargains, but this test just had to be. So quickly put times under it and looked, what is in there so. Or better not. There was no trace of vanadium at all. On the outside there was some chrome-nickel, then only a layer of nickel and then? Iron, so in the best case normal tool steel, because the carbon content was at least very low.
As already written, I could have put the 0.2 to 0.3 percent carbon in there as well, but you can’t define that exactly. I would have had to measure several times for a reliable value and would not have been any smarter in the end. A device like this also has its limits, as does the screwdriver. So we leave that out of the table for lack of relevance. It’s steel, so it fits. Or not, because it is not an alloy
Of course, I also did the counter test. For this I took my good old Wera screwdriver. This is quality and you can measure it. Chrome and nickel on the outside. And we can already see, I would have had to torture my way through the really massive coating even further (10 shots) to finally arrive at the actual body. Then the vanadium content would have surely slipped below 0.2% and the chromium content would be around 1%. I had measured this before and came up with exactly such a result. The table also shows the mass fraction (wt%), one could also have gone to mol% or at%.
Summary and first conclusion
For a pure toy, such equipment would of course be too expensive, because I’m not a money-grabbing influencer with endless monetization opportunities. But the ROI I get for sure in the combination of everything loose. Of course, that’s exactly what I planned beforehand. And it’s not the only major investment in our technology in this year 2023. I hope that all these things will be a step in the right direction, which can also make you a bit less dependent on the whole quota mania and the endless advertising distribution battles.
In the end, it’s the courage to niche and focus a bit more on the depth of the content, even if it’s getting harder and harder to break it all down in a generally understandable way without losing substance. We’ve already had this topic recently. But a little more contrast to the vast majority of the competition won’t hurt. If everyone always does the same thing, the small ones will be dead in the water and the big ones will suffer from personnel costs. That’s where I opt out and rely on our community, which contributes more than necessary to versatility. Whether 3D printers, fans, background articles or product tests – the mix makes me optimistic.
