Temperature behavior
The well-known Ryzen platform including the power-hungry 3070 Ti was used as the test system. Instead of the air cooler, an AIO was again used.
General conditions
- 22.6°C room temperature
- Case fans fixed at ~700rpm
- AIO fans fixed at ~700rpm
- AIO pump fixed at ~4000rpm
CPU Torture
For the CPU Torture test, Cinebench R23 was used in the loop. The 3900X was completely let off the leash and, thanks to activated PBO, allowed itself a whopping 145 watts over the entire test period. The temperatures stabilized after a few minutes, then monitoring was started. The CPU temperature showed an average temperature of 79.8°C during the test run, with the maximum at 81.4°C. Compared to the Ceres 300 tested yesterday, the temperatures are 2-3K higher, but this is also due to the higher room temperature and especially the fact that the radiator in this configuration did not get any (cool) fresh air from the outside, but had to cope with the waste heat from the inside.
Gaming
Borderlands 3 was again used for the gaming test, because it generates a constant and very high load, which fully exhausts the TDP limit of the graphics card over the entire test period. The 3070 Ti is allowed to draw a senseless amount of power out of the box, and with its 290 watts it is perfectly suited for case testing. I also allowed for a small warm-up period before this test because the waste heat from the graphics card definitely affects the coolant in the radiator in this scenario. After a while, the temperatures settled down and I started monitoring. The pump and case/radiator fan ran at the speeds listed above in this test as well. As part of the painting process, the graphics card was of course also provided with fresh thermal paste (Kryonaut), which unexpectedly resulted in a clearly measurable reduction in temperatures. Thus, the card only reached an average temperature of 72.3°C in this test, which is about 5K below the measured value in the Ceres 300 – at 2K higher room temperature and low fan speed. The CPU was slightly warmer than in the Ceres with about 64°C, but this is again related to the positioning of the radiator.
Interim conclusion
The Shadow Base 800 is a pretty big case with a gross volume of almost 70 liters. Paired with the very good pre-installed 140mm fans, it’s virtually impossible to cause a heat buildup inside the case even with power hungry graphics cards and processors. Up to 700 rpm the Light Wings are practically silent and in the illuminated white variant simply very nice to look at. For purely air-cooled systems, the case is actually already complete overkill with its dimensions.
