Summary and conclusion
The be quiet! Dark Power 13 850W is a high-quality power supply that offers high efficiency and absolutely silent operation in all load ranges. The cherry on top is ATX v3.0 compatibility, which allows the PSU to deliver up to 1700W for a short time (0.1ms) while keeping the voltage rails under control. Like most manufacturers, be quiet! did not follow Intel’s guidelines and installed a 12VHPWR cable that delivers 600W of power via its sense pins.
Also, if the OCP trip points are set that high, I don’t see the point of the multiple 12V rails. It would be much better if the correct amperage values were indicated on the label with the performance data. However, this is not a problem, and I suggest that you use the OCK slot bracket or OCK jumper to combine all 12V rails into a single, powerful rail. This means you don’t have to bother studying the manual and power distribution before connecting the modular cables. I am not a fan of multi-rail power supplies, but the truth is that they are safer than those with only one 12V rail.
be quiet! continues to deliver quality products, with the emphasis not so much on overall performance, but mainly on efficiency and noise. Competition in this category and price range is fierce, so I would try to make the platform more efficient in some areas, namely load regulation and power factor at 230 V, and the 5-VSB rail also needs an efficiency boost. There is also no need for such high power on the secondary rails, especially at 3.3 V. No normal system will draw more than 20A on this rail, so why allow more than 33A?
In general, the be quiet! Dark Power 13 850W a highly efficient power supply with top processing quality that offers absolutely silent operation. With its performance, it is not one of the best devices in this performance class, and with a price of around 230 Euros, it cannot really be called affordable. If you then add around 40 Euros, you are even on the safer side with the 1000 Watt model. The 40 euro cheaper 750 watt model can be used if you don’t have the most power-hungry hardware. There are enough reserves there, too. Nevertheless, the premium surcharge is not small for all three models.
Full power at 47°C ATX v3.0 and PCie 5.0 ready 12VHPWR connector (600W) High build quality High efficiency Quiet operation Sufficiently high PF at 115V Decent ripple rejection Properly set OPP and OCP on the side rails Long bypass time Low power consumption at 115V ALPM support Fully modular Reasonable spacing (150mm) between peripheral connectors FDB fan Ten year warranty |
Not impressive overall performance High OCP trip points on all rails Low PF at 230V Increased inrush currents at 230V 5VSB rail needs efficiency boost Only two 4-pin Molex connectors |
Many thanks to Aris, whose data I am allowed to use in the future and will do so, if readers want such network tests.
