AMD Ryzen 5 1600X and 1500X – light and shadow in duet

The Ryzen 5 1600X and 1500X presented today (and tested) are actually no longer really new, because we find the same archtitecure in the whole CPUs of the Ryzen 7 family. Windows 10 Creators Update and Changes

During the launch article of AMD's Ryzen 7 CPUs, we had already explained all workstation and HPC benchmarks in great detail and also questioned the background for many results in some cases even down to the last detail. Therefore, as with the follow-up with the Ryzen 7 1700X aand 1700, we will simply summarize the countless benchmarks for clarity in a spare way and thus also tighten up a bit.

We've also re-energised all the hardware with Windows 10 Creators Update, with the latest BIOSen and latest chipset drivers for the right motherboards, as well as faster memory. Therefore, the results obtained are in some cases very different from what we were able to determine in the older tests.

The choice of processors has also changed somewhat. Basically, we are again orientating ourselves to the gaming run – but not completely. Since this is also about workstation tasks, we want to compare the Ryzen 5 1600X at least with Intel's smallest six-nucleus, even if it plays in a different league in terms of price and would therefore fall through the cracks when gaming. We have also sorted out some HPC benchmarks (High Performance Computing) as the CPUs tested today definitely appeal to a different target group.

2D Bechmarks: DirectX and GDI/GDI+

We first added the new CPUs to AutoCAD 2D and our graphics throughput benchmark for the GDI/GDI+ functions and combined them into a common gallery gallery. The two "new ones" rank exactly where you could expect them based on the bar. The update of the Windows versions has given AutoCAD some boost, but worlds are still not:

 

2D benchmarks: Adobe Creative Cloud

In this suite, both CPUs rank as expected, which in turn is a matter of the bar. While the Ryzen 5 1600X is quite well in the race, the Ryzen 5 1500X has to leave some good springs quite often. SMT doesn't really help, especially since inInDesign even has to beat the old FX processor. This does not mean that the Ryzen 5 1500X would be unusable now, but we expected a little more, even compared to the 1600X.

 

3D Bechmarks: DirectX and OpenGL

The graphics performance of the CPUs in the single programs and suites now gives an overall picture, which is also no different from the core statements of the launch article. However, the Ryzen 5 1500X is often at the low level of the low clocked Ryzen 7 1700, while the Ryzen 5 1600X performs better in direct comparison by lengths.

 

CPU Performance: Workstation

Of course, in the production area, not only 3D graphics performance is important in the application, because many things are calculated by the CPU in parallel within these applications (simulations, compute tasks, preview rendering, etc.). In order to get a truly objective impression, you always have to look at both in context.

But that's where all Ryzen 7 sit not so badly and even the Ryzen 5 1600X still makes a pretty convincing figure. The Ryzen 5 1500X alone is clearly shortened when SMT doesn't help, because no eight threads can be used in these applications.

 

CPU Performance: Photorealistic Rendering

In final rendering, it is not so much universality that matters, but the most efficient and fast, parallelized processing. That is why we prefer to look at this section separately. It is no wonder that the Ryzen 5 1500X is clearly flattened by all other Ryzen models.

In the end, there are simply at least two physical cores missing, which the Ryzen 5 1600X has to offer. At least the pure four-cores of Intel without SMT are still reasonably within sight or even under control if you bet on the smallest Ryzen 5.

 

CPU Performance: Encoding and Compression/Decompression

Number crunchers have actually been AMD's CPUs before and so it's no surprise that the larger Ryzen CPUs can put on quite a good show. Only the Ryzen 5 1500X is a bit off and even offers a kind of blackout when unpacking, because it has to beat the old FX-8370. Compared to Intel's four-cores, they can often benefit from the higher clock speed, even if without SMT fewer threads can actually be processed in parallel.

 

Intermediate conclusion

The Ryzen 5 1600X is quite interesting for many workstation solutions, if you want to bet on at least six real cores and are willing to compromise at the clock. Here the price certainly heals many benchmark wounds, because you can put it on a 100-euro motherboard without any losses, which is not possible with Intel's Core i7-6800K. What stands in the way of the workstation is the maximum sensible and stable memory expansion. More than 32 GB were not useful to operate in the test system, especially since the maximum speed could only be achieved with 16 GB and two installed modules.

Without real overclocking, the Ryzen 5 1500X is not really for real workstation use despite SMT. Above all, there is a lack of clock work to compensate for what is already lacking in performance in computing in CAD applications. In the end, it's neither fish nor meat, and you can't save itself by price if you compare Intel's Core i5-7400 order 7500. Because for these there are already inexpensive motherboards, where the full assembly with as much memory as possible without loss of speed is definitely easier to solve.
