Picture and sound wireless: Gigabyte SkyVision WS100
With video and audio it becomes more difficult, but the problem can still be solved well. If you use a solution like Gigabyte’s SkyVision, you kill both sound and picture with a single USB stick.
Gigabyte relies on the WHDI standard 1.0 for the SkyVision. The bottom line is that you get a quite fast connection with up to 3 Gbit/s. The use of the frequency range between 5.1 GHz and 5.8 GHz also ensures that our WLAN with 5 GHz is not interfered with and that there are no picture impairments in the opposite case due to WLAN operation. By the way, this test was also one of the reasons to use the aforementioned 5 GHz adapter for the WLAN. Test passed, because video and sound still work perfectly despite the HD stream in the WLAN.
It was also important for me that the most common formats and resolutions are supported, so not just the pure movie resolutions, as with some other competitor solutions. However, two important limitations should not be forgotten, because no HD sound formats are supported and “normal” 5.1 and DTS are the end of the line; more is just not possible. 3D video formats do not work with it either. Blu-ray playback of Avatar was definitely not possible in the test, and gaming in 3D also failed on a monitor that is actually well-suited for it. Transmitter in USB stick form:
By the way, the 29.97 Hz used for video transmission of 1080p material is a matter of taste; my TV ate this without any problems, anyway. The receiver can be connected to the TV or to a monitor.
Overall, I quite liked this solution for the train, moreover, you could start immediately without installing various drivers and without any configuration. Only the price of about 100 euros is a little steep; but who wants to be beautiful must suffer, as is well known, and every luxury has its price.
