Ryzen R7 2700X Beginner Overclocking Guide: an 8-core bargain in the fast lane

Let’s take a look at what the Ryzen 7 2700X (179€) has in comparison to the Ryzen R5 3600 (166€). We remember briefly that the two CPUs are currently only 13€ apart in price. Yes, that’s about. 8% depending on current prices. So now we find that we get for 13€ more money, an older Ryzen 7 2700X and what can it do better or worse now compared to the 3600? I have used exemplary benchmarks for this:

The Ryzen 7 2700X , including my model – scores 428 points in the Single Core of Cinebench R20. The Ryzen R5 3600 is 12% better with 480 points. In other words, the Ryzen 7 2700X is slower. A comparison of the single core performance of both CPUs, overclocked to 4.2 GHz each, does not bring any improvements at this point. So let’s make a multi-core comparison!

Yes, we do maths again and look at the percentage differences. The Ryzen 7 2700X (stock) with its 3951 points is 9.6% faster than the Ryzen 5 3600 with its 3602 points. If we compare the overclocked CPUs with each other, then we find out? It’s actually a whopping 12%. the Ryzen 7 2700X is overclocked 12.1% better than the Ryzen R5 3600. If we calculate a Stock Ryzen R5 3600 against a 4.2 GHz Ryzen 7 2700X, then the Ryzen 7 2700X is even 16.8% better! Well, now we’ve seen Cinebench, but as we all know, we can’t do professional work with the Cinebench, let alone gamble.

So let’s see what makes the different single-core & multi-core performance so real when Kevin and Mandy gamble at home or Igor renders his YouTube videos.  That’s why let’s take a look at Blender. The Ryzen 7 2700X is 208 seconds faster = 3.4 minutes = 18.3%, which is not only measurable, but you can feel it. The lead from the Cinebench is almost doubled here!

Matching the current situation: the Corona Benchmark. The Ryzen 7 2700X beats the Ryzen R5 3600 in the benchmark by a whopping 28 seconds, making the Ryzen 7 2700X 23.5% faster.

And Premiere Pro CC? Another victory for the Ryzen 7 2700X, this time it is 67 seconds faster and that is 14.1%!

Thus, the Ryzen 7 2700X (stock) is on average 18.6% faster than the Ryzen R5 3600.

Summary and conclusion

Currently, the one Ryzen 7 2700X costs approx. 8% (13€) more than a Ryzen R5 3600. The Ryzen 7 2700X is available in all CPU applications, who would have thought faster and without overclocking! With two cores more and the results from the Cinebench, you didn’t have to be a master of the obvious to foresee that. The most important thing here is that we get an average of 18.6 percent extra power in the application area for the €13 (8%) that need to be spent, which is clearly noticeable and can save a few minutes in waiting time.

Since we can make a 9.6% minimum lead, even 12.1 to 16.8% by overclocking the Ryzen 7 2700X to 4.2 GHz, this also plays an important role in all CPU-heavy applications. Overclocking the CPU is not rocket science, but should always be done wisely. The approach to overclocking in general can be applied here in principle for all other CPUs, whether Intel or AMD.

The Ryzen 7 2700X, overclocked at 4.2 GHz, runs stable at quite passable temperatures. At this point I would like to recommend an AIO (Cooler Masters 240 is in the range of approx. 70€) or a good air cooler (Be Quiet!/Noctua, which cost about the same) Furthermore, the Ryzen 7 2700X is also well positioned in gaming for the next few years, considering that games are always optimized for multi-core performance or already some games with 4 core CPUs limit the GPU so blatantly that you know “grad auf’der Sau davoreite”! (that was perfect Swabian).

The performance of the Ryzen 7 2700X in 1080p is just as good for gaming with a 144 Hz monitor combined with a good GPU as with the Ryzen R5 3600. Anything that plays out in the 1440p or even 4K range is not an issue for the current Intel or AMD CPUs, because the GPU is almost always the limiting factor here. So if you’re going to get a ca. Buying or building a PC that costs 950 to 1,000 euros and not only gamble, but also wants to edit the pictures for mum or the “video”, shot with his girlfriend, should also worry about a Ryzen 7 2700X. Yes, from me also the 2700 without X, because also goes with some skill to overclock up to 4.2 GHz!
