Optional LCD display
As with the Tower series and its big brother, the Ceres 500, the Ceres 300 can be expanded with a 3.9″ LCD display. This optional expansion costs a hefty 129.90€, which is even more expensive than the case itself. Since I didn’t have the display for the Ceres 300 at hand, I’ll present the display from the 500 as a substitute for it, which should be practically identical.
The technical data:
There is nothing to criticize about the workmanship.
The installation is child’s play and done in a few minutes. The display is connected to a free USB 2.0 header on the motherboard.
The display can be used to monitor temperatures, the weather or the time, for example, or just play a funny cat GIF. As a control freak, I already like the possibility of hardware monitoring, but overall it’s more of a gimmick than really useful. Especially because of the relatively limited possibilities, which I will briefly introduce in the next section.
TT Plus Software
Due to the lack of compatible devices, I can of course only show you the functions that the optional display also supports. This is also clearly pointed out when starting the software..
In the tab “My PC” we find a rather superficial hardware monitoring, where I see a lot of potential wasted. Maybe we should think about a HWinfo plugin or a bridge between both programs.
The options for displaying different data also seem unfinished implemented. I can select different styles including colors for a clock, but alternating with the hardware monitoring it can’t be displayed.
Instead of the information visible on the left (hardware monitoring), an animated GIF image can be shown on the display..
Thermaltake even provides more of these on the website.
My opinion
Nice gimmick, but apparently not yet fully implemented. Whether the community/fanbase can make more out of it, I haven’t found out yet as of today. Considering the fact that the display increases the price of the case by more than 100%, I don’t see a convincing argument that would speak FOR the purchase.
