Temperature behavior
I now ran the stress test for over 20 minutes at 200 watts, although I was quickly annoyed that I hadn’t done it at 250 watts, but in the end you can see the small difference quite well. On the other hand, the test ran for longer. I did the tests with the blob, the sausage and the spreading twice and then evaluated the best one, in this case it was the second test with a sausage, as the best “normal” method. The peaks of the total temperature go up to 78 °C, the average rises again slightly to 75 °C after approx. 15 minutes. In principle, this value is not even bad, but we also remember the impression of the hunchbacked CPU.
Now let’s move on to the run with the X-Apply. Same conditions and same Torture test, but slightly different temperatures as a result. The first realization was, and this is a very important one: all four runs (I only had 4 samples) produced a completely congruent result in the end. This means that the human factor, pasting skills and luck/randomness can almost be ruled out! So you have actually already achieved what you wanted – idiot-proof processing without fear of missing the paste quantity.
If we look at the temperatures, we haven’t achieved a miracle with the X-Apply (how could we?), but apart from the one peak of up to 77 °C, the average temperature at the end is around 73 °C, i.e. around 2 Kelvin lower than with the sausage. These are not galaxy-sized differences, but more than could be covered by a tolerance. However, it should also be noted that it was “only” 200 watts and a flat CPU would certainly have managed with a little less paste. Nevertheless, the type of application performs quite well.
Summary and conclusion
Since I’m an old, lazy bastard who’s always in a hurry and I think I have enough skills to get to the ideal with 1 to 2 Kelvin delta if necessary and to be able to live with it, the X-Apply would be a bit too fiddly for me on a daily basis, I’m happy to admit. On the other hand, I was beaten by my own 12-year-old son, who then let himself be celebrated. Ok, I don’t begrudge him that, because he did cheat with the foil. Which of course brings us to the conclusion.
An X-Apply like this is actually indispensable for anyone who is doing the paste for the first time or simply doesn’t have the confidence to do certain things. A foil template is ideal for such purposes. It creates application safety, avoids pointless messing about with too much paste and, in return, guarantees that there is at least always enough paste. Of course, the opening area and layer thickness are a compromise, but it almost always works well, because I deliberately used the most curved CPU (without an extra frame or mega-thick backplate) that I could find here. If it still performs, the rest does even better. Worst case scenario.
Even if one or two professionals might be smiling now, they could lose their laughter very quickly. Just like me. Unfortunately, skills are only ever any good if you’ve had a good day. With an X-apply like this, you can do it even in the deepest valley of lack of concentration, which was to be proven. I’d like to point out once again that the X-Apply wasn’t my idea, but you simply have to give good ideas a chance and invest some time, even non-profit ones. The process and the brand are now also protected.
Availability and source of supply
The applicator will be available as X-Apply AMD (AM5), X-Apply Intel (LGA1700 and 1851) and X-Apply X as a universal film that can be cut to size for all kinds of applications, including a template. It will still take a few weeks before everything is really ready for self-distribution, as packaging, supplier material, web store, Amazon etc. still need some time. However, the parties involved have decided on what I consider to be a sensible way to realize both self-distribution and still act as an OEM for bulk deliveries to interested companies in the future.
There will also be a direct contact option at www.x-apply.com (x-apply.de and x-apply.eu) where interested end customers can register without obligation. They will then receive an e-mail with the various purchase options by 01.06.2024 at the latest. A simple e-mail with the text INFO and the desired e-mail address to be notified is sufficient. The website is currently under construction, but the contact information is already online and clickable.
