A little over a year ago, I reviewed the then newly released Mugen 5 from Scythe here with a black coloring. Since I also had the untreated variant of the heatsink from a previous article at hand, I was able to draw a direct comparison between the heatsink in silver and black – with an identical fan. It was found that the cooler with a dip coating performed measurably worse.
Here the whole article:
Scythe Mugen 5 Black Edition im Test – Enttäuschende Lackierung des CPU-Kühlers
Also to remember, I even tested several copies of the Black Edition back then and still came to the same conclusion, it wasn’t simply due to a defective sample. Now the manufacturer has contacted me again and offered me the “Rev. C” christened, according to their own statement improved version of the cooler.
I won’t present the whole cooler again in this article, because besides the alleged internal improvements and now native support for Intel Socket 1700, not much has changed.
Externally, there is absolutely no difference on the heat sink. The fan has been replaced from the Kaze Flex 120 with the newer Kaze Flex II 120, but the values are very close. More on this below.
The heatpipes also look unchanged, the known 6 pieces from the “Rev. A” remain.
I have been asked not to publish the exact changes, but something may have changed in the area of this image. However, not much information has been leaked.
Specifications
Scythe’s EU site doesn’t even list the old version of the cooler anymore, but the US website still has both product pages online. So that we don’t lose this information, I have saved both websites in the WaybackMachine:
More information than the selection immediately below can be found on the EU product page from the manufacturer. And here in direct comparison of the most relevant values:

16.90 – 67.62 CFM |
Static pressure |

So there were a few changes here and there, but the values of the fans are already very close to each other on paper and due to various variances in reality, they can practically be considered identical.
