With the new Pulse Pocket Portable, Sapphire is also following the trend towards minimization and, in AMD, has the right partner for the new, so-called PP form factor. The new graphics chip is called Navi39 and is also economical enough to be powered directly from the USB port. As AMD is also allowed to participate in the new HVS program (High Voltage Substrate) thanks to TSMC, the annoying and inefficient voltage converters are no longer necessary as the chip is supplied directly with the 5V voltage of the USB. The cards can even be secretly overvolted at smart UVB sockets (up to 18 volts), which promises an enormous overclocking reserve.
Sapphire is currently only offering the mysterious PPP (Pulse Portable Pocket) in a dual-mini-fan design and the inclined customer will have to ensure that the neighboring ports are not covered or that the sticks do not collide. The leaked card, which will probably be officially presented at Computex 2024 in Taipei, is a so-called 1.5-port card, but the RX 7015 XTX is also expected to be a gamer card in the familiar 3-port design, which unfortunately covers 3 USB ports.
However, this shouldn’t be a problem for ambitious gamers, as Sapphire also offers suitable, actively cooled USB hubs. But you’ll have to be careful here too, because not every hub will be able to cope with the waste heat (DHT Direct Heat Touch) of the Navi39 chip, which is also dissipated directly via the connector. This is because this chip is cooled directly via the extended metal shell of the connector. In addition, this special cooling lug is thermally connected directly to the substrate by means of liquid metal, which drastically reduces the heat transfer resistance. And if things go very badly, the so-called 5VHPWR USB connector quickly becomes the charred counterpart of the 12 + 4 connector from NVIDIA. We will have to keep a close eye on what happens here.
